Does a horse with an infection have a lowered immune system?

It is more subsecptible to other "attacks" to the immune system, as the immune system is already fighting one invasion

Not necessarily, horse and people get infections thats life. A horse with an infection will have a raised white cell count . if the horse gets recurring infections or has difficulty fighting it off, then it could have a lowered immunity and maybe it would be worth investigating.
