Vets have diagnosed a severe bowel infection in my mare. Finally a proper diagnosis after 5 weeks of utter hell. Where this has originated from, they and I have no idea as her diet previous to this was very simple. They think she may have developed a gluten allergy, though this is very rare in horses but not unheard of.
Have any of you heard or know of a horse or pony with a gluten allergy? What do they get fed? How do you manage it?
Thank goodness for the internet off to look for any info whatsoever.

Not a horse but a friend has this so some knowledge, it should be easy enough to manage in a horse, far easier than humans when it is in so much.
Hay and grass obviously as the basic diet, sugar beet I would think is fine, there are rice based feeds I remember years ago someone feeding a pony on plain boiled rice, possibly due to allergy but I don't remember all the details, copra from coconuts, linseed or oils also should be fine. You just need to avoid any compound feeds that will include grains.

I am pleased it is all looking positive.
