I'm looking to buy a french link pelham, and buying one new with curb chain, leather gaurd, lip strap and roundings is proving to be very expensive! i know you can get second hand saddlery so can you get second hand bits cheap too?

thanks

i dont think you should get a second hand bit as the horse may have had strangles or any other disease or the yard the bit has been in may have had strangles or another disease. it is probably best to invest into a new french link pelham with curb chain, leather gaurd, lip strap and roundings just incase even if it is expensive.

Wow thats a bit extreme! You could always clean it prior to use ;-)

eBay is your friend, some excellent bargains on there - you should be able to get that lot for around a tenner :-)

ive had a look on ebay but french link pelhams seem hard to come by ! all mullen mouths or single joint =[ facebook swap shop? what is that ive never heard of it!

I may just give up and fork out for a new set but if i do get my hands on a cheaper second hand dont worry it will be fully steralised! :P

Why are you buying a Pelham then putting roundings on it ? By putting roundings on you loose the point of the 2 rings for 2 reins , you loose the subtlety. If you find 2 reins are too much of a handful I would suggest a Kimblewick , cambridge mouth ( it has a port in it so kind in your horses mouth and the port gives your horse room to move its tongue and swallow ) .If you get a slotted Kimblewick you can slot your rein through a lower slot to give you poll pressure ( as you would with a Pelham ), you still have a curb chain so all very similar . The roundings are what , about , £14 ... ? So a saving there . And by getting a Kimblewick you'll get a bit that works with 1 set of reins.

I considered the kimblewick but was told it doesnt have quite the same action as a pelham as the poll pressure is quite a fair bit less and works more like a hanging snaffle which she is already in, is this wrong then?

Funny, I have often bought 2nd-hand. Disinfectant works wonders you know.
Are you that loaded you can afford to buy everything new?
To buy 2nd-hand, means a bit more money in the bank for the winter hay bill.....
Your post made me howl......

To sterlise a bit buy some steriliser tablets (very cheap) for baby bottles & leave to soak overnight. If you don't want to do that put the bit into boiling water for a few minutes.

OMG put it in dishwasher that would kill anything sheesh

where are u we have Catlip Farm chorleywood she has 1000 bit second hand as well as rugs bridles etc she guarantee have one

im from leicestershire so quite a way out for me ! might buy the bit new on ebay and get the roundings chain and another pelham bit in one really cheap if i can. ill end up with two bits but will be cheaper! never know she might prefer a mullen mouth :)

A hanging cheek snaffle doesn't really have much poll pressure as although the cheekpieces are fixed, the reins aren't. The result is the bit is nice and stable in your horse's mouth and I think this is actually a nice kind bit. The action is completely different to that of a pelham or kimblewick. I would agree with the poster who suggested using a kimblewick rather than a pelham with roundings, although double reins are much easier to use than most people think.
A kimblewick will give you poll action because, unlike a hanging cheek snaffle, the reins and the cheekpieces are fixed on the bit. Why don't you see if you can borrow one and try it out? Alternatively, have a lesson using double reins (attach double reins to a snaffle if you're really not confident) and see how easy they are to get the hang of.
Good luck.

ive had a look at the kimblewicks but they dont seem to come in french link/eliptical link unless its myler which is out of my price range by far, i cant help thinking the straight bar mouthpiece wont give as good a signal

Not sure if the right "side" of Leicestershire, but there is a horsey car boot this Saturday at Mooreland Stables,m at Griffydam - you might find just what you want there (and lots of other things that you didn't know you needed ;) )

I'll PM you directions if interested as I don't think they're on their website, and hard to find!

i dont think its too far from me, sounds good! do they do them regular as i am busy this saturday with a yard move unfortunately!

would like directions if you could :) thankyou

I just checked ebay, there's a few french link pelhams on there....I'm sure disinfecting/sticking it in the dishwasher will be fine :-D.....gawd that was funny lol!

I agree with bj666, I wouldn't use a pelham with roundings ever. Two reins aren't that difficult, after all I managed it!

Hi , a cambridge mouth ( mullen with a port ) is a very kind mouthpiece , a french link CAN still put pressure on your horses tongue which alot object to . Also a mullen/cambridge is very precise as there is no joint to move around and loose the single/aid. If you use one rein on say a snaffle the whole bit reacts . There are loads of Kimblewicks around (ebay etc ) find a slotted one with a cambridge mouth , put your rein on the lower slot and a loose curb chain , try it . If you need more control , tighten the curb , a link at a time until you have what you want . Its just finding what pressure on your horses head works . I know some that have only a shoestring for a curb chain and thats enough !!! The pelham with roundings and a curb guard with a french link ....its too complex and confusing ....KISS ... Keep It Simple Simple !!!!! Please ... do give it a go .

A bit of boiling water will kill strangles. Out of interest, which other diseases did you have in mind?
I personally don't see the point in buying a new bit when a second hand one will do the trick just as well.
In response to the OP, eBay is great for second hand tack.

I think i've decided to get a slotted kimblewick, i'm just stuck between what mouthpiece to get- she's always been in a lozenge or french link and is only averagely refined to aids - i read that the solid bars have a reduced signal to the mouth regarding flexion and turning as the sides don't flex individually,( hence why a bradoon is used on a double bridle- apparently!) i've seen the lozenge kimblewicks, quite a fair chunk more expensive but if it will send clearer aids it will be worth it. i read that the solid mouthpieces are an advance up from jointed for a more schooled horse?

Generally putting a Joint in a curb bit gives a more confusing signal than an unjointed mouthpiece. Give a Cambridge mouth a try, you can always sell on if she doesn't like it.

sorry to be a pain but could you /someone else explain why? just the lozenge is £42 and i can get a cambridge for less than £20 so if i bought a lozenge it would be twice the price, and after reading up on jointed signals i'm inclined to believe that it would give better signals, or rather the solid mouthpiece doesnt give very good signals.
been doing a fair bit of research (far too much time on my hands for this now im on exam leave and finished exams lol)

If you want an unjointed kimblewick I think I might have one sitting in the shed gathering dust if you papal me postage. I'll check if it's still there this evening exactly which one it is, whether it has a curb chain and you can PM me address etc if you want it. I need to have a clear out anyway as I am moving house and yards soon.

Ha ha always buy new had me in fits how doo you think bit banks work, by letting you try and if they dont fit/work they get them back and bin them nope, its called boiling water sterilising.
OP i would also try ebay, preloved most of the horse sites have tack for sale
