My usually quiet dependable mare, has turned into a loony fruitcake, this week.
For no other reason than....she is shedding her winter coat.
She is so very irritated by this and spends all her ridden time, being ridiculous.
She is constantly twitching, swishing her tail, doing full body shakes and all this in jog mode, she seems to have forgotten how to walk. Even throwing the odd buck in for good measure... She has never bucked with me before!!

I know the simple solution would have been to clip her, but this is not an option as she lives out and also doesn't do enough work through the winter to warrent this.

So does anyone else have this problem, and if so what do you do to help your itchy neddy??

Can anyone recommend any supplements, etc

Thanks in advance

It's probably more to do with the lovely spring like weather we've been having (at last).

The 'out' horses have been total looney tunes all week.

Mine is too full of the joys of spring! We've had quite a few bucks when schooling and a few ye-ha moments too which is very unlike him! I'm used to it around this time of the year though.

We thought that too for a moment, but she also did it at the end of the summer when she started to lose her summer coat. It wasn't as bad as there wasn't as much coat to lose.

She is a funny girl anyway, i have to use a clean numnah every ride or she gets irritated by any hair left from previous ride.

Ive let her out without a rug so she could have a roll, and brushed her and brushed her and brushed her etc etc.

Really wondered if anyone else had had the same problem and fed them a supplement and if it helped!

A friend has recommended linseed oil, but if anyone alse has had some good results with anything else i would love to know.

The problem is not that she is feeling so well! That bit i really enjoy.
The problem is that she is irritated by the loose hair and it is making her stop and shake her body just like a dog does when they get out of water. she also keeps trying to itch where her saddle is every few steps.

its not a case of me being worried about myself as even though she is being silly she is always safe to ride. I just want to try to take the itch away and make her feel better.

I guess it is the weather because 2 nights on the trot now I have gone to feed mine and he has sort of charged about, run off, had a buck and then came back to eat some more tea...wolfs this down then goes galloping round the fiedl bucking!!! Normally he won't lift his head out of his bowl in case he misses some!

Not really, i was grooming her for an hour the other day with a very soft rubber curry comb that is great for getting the hair out, which it did great, there was loads coming out but after an hour it still hadn't stopped, she is just so wooly.
I think maybe a bath is in order as that normally helps.

Does she do this every year? What is her skin like underneath, if you can see it? My mare gets very dry greasy skin at this time of year, normally a good bath in dermoline and a groom before hand sorts her out. What about lice?x

turned mine out in a rug early this morning (was looking like it was going to be a bad day) and when i went up at lunch to remove rugs he'd managed to get it half off anyway, his neck cover was holding it on so i dont know what he's been doing
