i was at my local saddlery today and saw two adverts for just grazing and i wondered does anyone actually want only grazing any more....???? with all the facilities on yards available why would anyone want just grazing, especially as some of these places dont even have hacking?

i just didnt think there were people out there who would want just grazing. no stable or hacking etc but i suppose retired horses and youngsters yeah!

If there was a decent amount of grazing for them to roam then yes I would happily keep my mare on grass livery. She is a cob and doesnt need to be in, a school isnt essential as we mainly hack, plus Im a fair weather rider anyway so I only hack when its dry :) :)
Id much prefer her to live naturally - shed be happy as larry mooching around all day and night :)

If I could have found it I'd gladly have put my 2yo out on grass livery. And actually if I could have both of mine out 24/7 all year I would. I don't need a stable. Grass livery with a school in hacking distance would suit me down to the ground. I see no reason to have them in over winter really.

At my yard I have two ponies but my youngster is out on grass livery. He is a highland so is more than able to cope with bad weather. It suits me very well.

I'm on grass livery, better for my boys wind to be out 24/7. This is his second winter living out & he wouldn't care much for coming into a dusty stable now :p

Our two are on grass livery. We had stables for an emergency last year but no electricity. This year we have a good dry field shelter which can be used if needed as a stable and lots and lots of grazing. We are on a yard with excellent facilities which we hardly use yet due to having one youngster not yet backed (next spring) and an oldie retired pony.

id use grass livery in summer but not in winter.

id rather she came in and had dry feet for a few hours a day (stupid i know)

But she gets bad mud fever and i dont want her stood in mud 24.7

If i had access to a stable/electrics it would be diff.......

Yes i do!! i have 2 youngsters and a semi-retired/turned away TB, looking at some winter grazing this afternoon actually as mine needs resting for the winter :)

Fields next door to me are going begging & nobody wants them!
1 is well drained and has elderly but usable field shelter in the middle of its 2 acres, other is a good 3 acre field for most of the year round except when very wet.
Unfortunately both need perimeter fencing addressed (which owner knows) and is happy for someone to be rent free for xyz time if they did this, or even to put up electric fences.
Been empty for at least 3 yrs now...... with no-roadwork hacking from gate, no parking of trailers etc tho as only room for a car in gateway. No takers tho

He keeps on at me to put something in to mow it with, but mine already have too much grass :(

Maybe I'll have to nag him to re-do fencing in the spring as its my boundary on 1 side that will keep stock in/out & is the only really decent fencing.......

To be honest I'd love my horse to be out full time (with a field shelter if she wants it -poor arthritic girl) she's a great hacker and if she is ridden again shell just ba hacked. Problem for me is i can't afford two horses and wouldn't want her left on her own AND there are no well drained fields by my house and would want her close by :p

I essentially have grass livery. Well technically I have two stables between three horses, but I've never even used one of them :p I don't have a school - I don't need one - I school and jump on grass most of the time occasionally hire an indoor for hardcore schooling and mostly hack out, other than competing. I have 2 in work, though I lay off the old boy a bit in winter.

I'd rather no facilities than be stuck having to stabe / limit turnout / deal with livery yard dramas / abide by other people's rules! :D

Meh.......i would love that!! except i need grazing in shropshire :( there doesn't seem to be alot going round here at the moment :(

I would have before my accident but right this moment I prefer the school! It is alot cheaper to do grass livery and hire a school round here than have grass livery at a yard with a school. As long as there was some form of hardstanding for farrier i'd go for it. Usually around this time I would be hunting every week and she's fully clipped. Schooling goes out the window!

I have two cobs on grass livery .They have access to a shelter ,which could be used as a stable as needs be. I prefer to keep them out , better for them and safes on work . Luckily there is very good hacking . I school whilst out hacking. Grass livery would not work for me if the hacking was poor .

Where is all this grazing land?!?! My boys live out all year round and do great on it - but the field they're on now isn't ideal. I'm in Cheshire if anyone knows of any there!!

Hacking out, that's my current problem. I rent a lovely yard to myself, couple of stables, tack room, haybarn etc., 8 acres but I'm completely landlocked, not ideal. I've got 2 young horses that need to get out and see the world, and 2 oldies that I need to keep ticking over. I hardly ever use the stables, my herd live out all the time, seems a waste of a yard when all I need is a large field, a field shelter and access to some quiet lanes.
