Riders are wearing helmet cameras to provide evidence of drivers passing too close and being abusive.

I think it's a great idea and, even if I don't always turn it on, will start hacking out with my "cob-cam". To be fair though as there are so many horses where I keep mine all the drivers are pretty good although you always get the odd eejit!

I have a tiny cam about the size of a pack of chewing gum (no screen) that I attached to my helmet once for a laugh. Needed some adjustment as most of the film it was pointing at the sky and trees!

Also the battery ran out 3/4 of the way round the hack  lol oh well.

Was about £20. Have used it skiing too :)

They are an excellent idea if you hack out on busy roads , or rat run rural lanes like we do.All too often an incident can happen and a car has gone before you get the reg, they are good for recording verbal abuse too.

I would love one - and would pass weekly footage of dreadful drivers to the police.

I believe that you can get one with a built in memory, so it is constantly holding the last 5 minutes or so of footage, but then overwriting, to avoid you having to film the whole hack. So after an incident, you can just tell the samera to keep the last 5 minutes. Saves you having to sift through hours of footage. I think they are a fair bit more expensive though.

I don't at the moment but think it's a fantastic idea. So any suggestions on good brands and prices would be helpful...

I recently had a close encounter with a large lorry which had clear branding of a local company across the side. I managed to remember that so when I got home, sent a very carefully worded email to the company, copied into BHS and local equine police address. I don't know how much will actually come of it since the chap who replied denied it could be one of their lorries...but said he'd talked to his drivers and given them the BHS Horse Sense for Motorists pdf I attached to the email.... Hat cam would have been useful to prove it was his company though!

I'd feel a bit of a prat riding with a camera on my head personally....

Though, with a 'Polite' tabard in tow too....wonder how slow cars would go! :p

I bought an Actioncam to try around my old yard's XC, and I didn't find them very good. Fiddly and I could never tell when the damn thing was recording!

Still, was only £20 so it hardly broke the bank and was worth a shot!

It's now broken. I left it in the chest freezer and the damp has ruined the screen so nothing comes up.......

I think its a great idea! Could really see it bringing down the accident toll that seems to be getting even higher!
Can see it catching on and the whole tabard idea warning people you are filming is a good plan, makes drivers think twice ;)

We use head cams for horse boarding but never thought to use it while hacking. They cheap ones normally arnt very good vid quality with rubbish battery life, you really need to spend a bit of money for a good one.

They sound like a good idea but I wonder how useful any footage would be actually. Would it actually be legal? We had covert cameras at our yard (following a spate of burglaries) and the police had to do a reccy on the place as any filming that might take place in a public place would not have been admissible in court without warning signs or something. I wonder if hat cam film would fall into the same category. Just wonderments really. I still think it's a good idea though.

Follow my link at the bottom, the Forest cross one, the socializing one and the caught dogs unaware were all done with a cheap head cam from Maplins, the others were done with a regular hand held cam riding one handed, the other poorer qaulity ones were done with a phone.

I have a mini DV80, was all of £15 (although you can get it even cheaper now!). Don't use it for hacking, but for common rides etc. Not the quality you would get from a top of the range Go Pro or anything, but I don't think it's too bad :D Record time depends on the micro SD card you use, but is in the 2 - 4 hour range.

Sound quality is poor to begin with - it was a VERY windy day! Also think I need to fix it with a slightly lower angle - easy to do though :)
