From the day I came back to weston lawns my wheel barrow has been going missing- which was really pissing me off- so tonight my fork has now gone and my wheel barrow outside my stable full of muck- I dont mind people using anything- but just put it back how you found it!! Now I have to go fork hunting tomorrow night!!

Don't get me started on this one Flintus! Like you, I don't mind at all people borrowing stuff but (a) bl**dy put it back EMPTY afterwards, (b) if you break it, replace it and (c) just because you find something unattended at that moment (because someone's borrowed and left it lying around), it doesn't mean you can pick it up and claim it! Ye gods!

This used to happen to me when I was at my mates yard, I always made sure my barrow was empty for the next day and my fork put away, so when I used to get there the next morning to find barrow full and fork outside all wet it used to make me seethe with anger. Petty I know but it's not how I left it!

Don't have to worry now, as am in mum's yard and I just tell her off if there is anything wrong

I did shout loudly tonight- "Shall I empty this barrow for you then!!" as I knew who it was- she was lucky- a few up there would of emptied it outside the stable door!!

and I also asked about my fork to which no one knew about- I told them Flint must of eaten it!!

See I've never had this problem.

The only thing of mine that has gone missing is my horse.

Once of the Liveries husbands brought her in thinking it was hers.

My friend spent ages panicking and looking in her field until the bloke politely asked who the horse belonged to as he realised he'd brought the wrong one in.

you wouldnt believe how many times my things went mising down there. my bridle, reins, lunge lines, brushes. went down there one day to find someone had used my bot knife to try and open a bale of hay and broken it. she still hasnt got me a new one...

Gah, tell me about it! Have now stuck little plastic tag labels on all my hay nets, feed buckets etc. Don't even start me off on loose dogs that nick and chew your stuff, pee up your rugs and haynets and a certain farrier that allows his mutts to run riot and crap in your stable. Tell you what tho it don't half teach you to put stuff away/shut the door not that I didn't before but am extra careful now!

Just small things like grooming stuff has gone missing at my yard, luckily.
A lot of my stuff is kept in my horses stable, he has a humungous stable for some reason, so much room that i have fit a large trunk in it.
So he can watch over it and stop anyone from stealing anything!

well me and my closer friends use each others things but we all respect each others belongings,i don't mind certain people on my yard using my stuff but there are a few that just use things with out asking and NEVER put stuff back where they got it from which is sooo frustrating! Today i came down the yard and someone used my stable for their horse and it was a [****] tip,my mare had been in it but she never ruins the banks or makes it a mess like that, it was truly messed up with lots of poo and wee in it,don't mind but the owners of the horse could of offered to clean it up a bit as there were other stables free,it seems mines now the favourite to abandon any horse or dog to poo in it every where! It does annoy as i seem to constantly muck it out after anything but my OWN horse! Sorry rather large rant now!

I'm on a small yard with only 10 people, we each have our own section with our things in it and people always ask if they want to borrow anything. We're all friendly with each other and there are hardly ever any problems. We all use each others wheelbarrows and skips, but have our own sets of tools that we ask before borrowing.

Most people on our yard have their own set of things although some have odd items missing that they then borrow from others. Usually most who borrow do put them back properly but I have found my skip tub full a few times and had to empty it. I prefer to have all my own things and if I find that I'm missing some item that I didn't know I needed and I've had to borrow then it's usually only once before I go out and buy my own. I like having things there when I need them.

If you haven't already done so, paint your/your horses name on all your things. "Borrowing" doesn't happen where I am, but there's only 3 of us there, and we all have our own private lockable stores. It would drive me mad, I don't mind if they ask, but not helping themselves to my stuff...

I had the same problem once, went to get Cass in and there was only one horse left in the field (Nutmeg) and it sure as heck wasn't mine (but to the untrained eye she did look a bit similar - same colour). I went to look in Nutmeg's stable and there was my horse Cass, happily munching through Nutmeg's hay and dinner. Oops. I brought Nutmeg in and gave her Cass's tea and put them back where they belonged.

Quite funny though I worried they would get colic having an entirely different supper for the night, but they were fine.

Now this is what I love about my yard, all the stables have built in cupboards, and Kaliefs is so big that I can fit all my feed & shavings in it. There are a few teenagers who think nothing of 'borrowing' stuff without bothering to return it. It really gets on my nerves!

They wouldn't dare, my reputation goes before me! Having said that, all my stuff in the tack room is in a large tack trunk with a padlock on it.

we all use eack other stuff at my current yard, because theres 3 of us, two adult and me so its not really an issue. but at my old yard i had a non slip pad taken, reflective sheet, reflective waistcoat, flyspray would run out withing 2 days of buying it, lunge whip was taken used and broken, my ride out (special occasion) reins were taken, torch was smashed never replaced and worse of all had my riding hat stolen!!!!

Bicycle locks are great you can the wire combination ones, wrap through and round fork and continue onto underside of barrow etc voila neither usable or nickable untill your return.

My Jeffries bridle went missing! that really pissed me off! Also I sometimes think the full liveries get better treatment. I am on full livery monday-friday but when a full livery lost a £10 headcollar it was a disaster when my £120 bridle went it was less cared about! I know who took it though it went missing the same week a livery went who I didnt get along with!

I am very lucky on our yard. There are 3 or 4 other liveries and nothing of mine has gone missing in 3 yrs. People ask if they want to borrow something and know I expect it back where they found it in the same condition.

I was at a yard though, where YO stole my horse food to feed hers (this was something that happened all the time as her OWN bins were perpetually empty). She also used my mane/tail spray, supplements and virtually anything else she fancied for her own horse. Some people are just incredible.

I am surprised at how many people have to put up with this, or alternatively lock up their stuff to avoid it. I am at a large livery barn (about 15 DIY liveries plus another 30+ horses on site) and we really just don't have these sorts of problems (and yes, we have a few teenagers on the yard)

We do sometimes bother each other's stuff. I regularly use the girl next door's shaving fork as it is a fab one (she knows btw)... but we always put stuff back where we find it. Occasionally someone might move a wheelbarrow but it is no big deal to just go and find it again. Only once have I found my wheelbarrow full of muck - I know who it was as well & she has left now - that really is the HEIGHT of bad manners and I did get mad but that was def a one off.

Where do all these 'borrow stuff and not return it' people come from? So rude. I think I am very lucky to be at such a nice livery yard where most people are pretty easy going and well mannered to each other

Instead of locking things away I've had to leave things out on the yard so they don';t get used! I have shared tackroom and got totally p**sed off having to go into someone elses stable and take back my shavings fork because one person preferred mine to hers! Now I keep mine outside my stable and it's always there when I need it (even if things get wet). Same person never asks, but also goes into my grooming box whch is on a shelf (so presumably takes it down) opens it up and takes out my big fat marker pen to write her name on all her stuff!! I know it's only a pen, but it really bugs the hell out of me that I pay for stuff even only a few pounds and other people think they don't have to buy their own stuff and can use mine! If they just asked I wouldn't mind so much. Deep breath and rant over LOL

QR-

If I don't have something i go out and buy it- I have never felt comfortable using other people's stuff. On the odd occasion (when I was on livery) that I didn't have something then I would ask to borrow once but make sure I supplied my own from then on.
I don't mind people borrowing my wheel barrow or yard equipment but I am very particular about my grooming kit, hoof picks or any of my horse's tack/ kit etc. Those I do not like sharing- or worse being "borrowed"!
