use a garage as a stable?

I have moved house and have a double garage in a big enclosed yard.

I used to have land and a steading for the horses but they had to winter out this year which was pretty hard on them (although they took it in turn to have a few weeks break each at my friends stables)
So, the farmer is renting me the field directly behind my yard/garage/house and I have decided to use the garage as a shelter for the three horses.

Has anyone else done this or used buildings that were designed for other uses as stables?

I know someone that has used both garages and an old coal house for their horses when pushed; this was years ago at a big old house so nobody thought anything of it; it's not much different from the old mews type stables! If your neighbours are likely to complain or drop you in it with the council is something to be aware of.
From the horse point of view, make sure there are no nails, hooks, shelves, electric fixings or windows that can do any damage and that the horses have room to turn around easily, that they're not nose to tail to the walls. Also make sure the floors aren't slippy and the doors are secure; can you split them top and bottom?

I havent personally but actually a girl i used to ride with alot did. They had a very similar set up by the sounds of it. A garage, enclosed yard all that connected to their field.
It all worked very well. They took off the sliding door and put across a long gate which they had attached boards to so that if the weather was really bad they could shut the horses in and the rain/snow wouldnt flood it etc. A bit like an american barn.
As the person above has said.....as long as the roof is high enough you shouldnt have any issues at all.......as long as you dont mind straw across the driveway ;-)

thanks guys.

Dont have any neighbours and you cant see the yard from the road so that shouldnt be an issue.
Roof is heigher than my old steading used to be.
Its basically a temporary measure until I can afford to put stables up.

I`m going to leave one garage door permanently shut and change the other one for some wooden garage doors that I have.
