Does anyone else's horse slow down on the way home?

My lad seems to love his work. When he's had enforced time off, he gets grumpy as anything. Today I took him to a HT, he was awesome, but when we turned back to the lorry the brakes went on! I thought he was spooking but he wasn't, he simply had not had enough. Out hacking he storms away from home, then when you turn him towards home he goes "oh, naaaah..." and slows up. Is he weird??

Mine's the same out hacking! Loves going away from home but when we're on the way back he doesn't half dawdle. ( and he's fully fit and enthusiastic about life in general:) ) He's always been like that in the 6 yrs I've had him

Mine usually knackered when on way home as he young and very unfit but all others i have had have all sped up on way home and spent all time jogging esspecially if we come home same way as went out

Lol!!! No chance!!! As much as she loves it, she like her home comforts too.........

I have not heard of that before!

Mine is fine on the way out (unless she is testing me) but on the way home nothing will stop her! She will head the ride, which would not be possible on the way out.

Mine will turn off away from home out hacking if she doesn't think I'm paying attention, and has been known to walk past the yard entrance if she doesn't think we should be done yet. She also avoids going back to the trailer if she can when we're "out". I put it down to being nosey as she also likes to look into gardens, fields etc. whenever possible. The speed seems to be random in either direction if left to her...

I'm glad you posted this because all mine have always been like this. Go like steam trains on the way out and then walk like the living dead on the way home. If I don't turn them into the yard they pick up suddenly and we are off again in the opposite direction!

My retired horse is the worst, he is still long-reined out to keep him occupied. You practically have a heart attack keeping up with him. When it is time to turn all hell breaks out, rearing, bunny hops, broncing. If during the whirling you manage to get him facing home he dawdles, has a wee, scratches, ducks round to go the other way.

When my last horse arrived he was nappy as hell, now he is the same and dawdles home - perhaps I just have really interesting hacking!

Slightly different, but I used to have a horse who would travel away from home brilliantly if going to a certain place - and would be a pain to load coming back :/ Other places, she'd just be a bugger to load on the way there, but be fine coming back?! Strange O.o

My boy is a complete weirdo (in the most lovely way) He will often plant himself and nap but only heading towards home!! If he thinks he hasn't been out for long enough it can be a total battle to get him home.
He always sets off all bouncey, bouncey and then when he realises we are coming home he starts getting slower. If you turn him away from home he perks right back up again.

Out competing he loads brilliantly to go out somewhere and then is really unenthusiastic about coming home.

He also hacks out much happier on his own, if he goes out with someone else he tends to be very 'switched off' he is also a bit grumpy with it and tends to pull faces at the other horse.

I was worried that he just didn't like the yard we were on but we have moved several times over the years and where he is now is so, so happy (with a girlfriend and everyfink) but he still does it.

Haha I wish. He is super slow out and mega quick back. Takes us 1 hr 30 to hack to Mayhill for dressage then 45 mins back

Waiting to hack new boy and find out what he is like!

My boy races home!! At old yard used to sometimes just go for a quick one up the road (about 30 min hack) and he would canter round the roundabout at the top when he knew he was going home! He loves being out, happy as larry but even happier when he knows he's going home for food!!
