Does anyone ever look to loan a companion horse?

I advertised the grey sec A in my signature as a companion horse to loan. I did get a couple of people interested in him. I think it's because he is small and cheap to keep. I don't know if people would be interested in loaning anything bigger that they couldn't use though.

We didn't loan him out in the end. My husband gave him to a friend in return for a winter's worth of hay for the others! The friend is also keeping him as a companion and my kids are free to see him anytime.

I did.

When we moved my mare off livery to our own place we wanted some company for her, so we got a 12h welsh A on loan. TBF she was broken in, and my stepson had just started riding, so she was ridden very occasionally, building up to riding her properly and us eventually buying her. But her main purpose initially was as a companion.

Even now, we have two horses, and they get very attached, so I do think about getting another as a companion to break up the coupleness. A friend up the road has an unrideable companion she took on full loan/was given.

You would have to be very careful where they went though - some people would probably try to ride them..

I have seen ads for companion ponies, but they are usually after something easy and small and not a laminitis risk, so land is preserved but it can live out.

Yes, I have in the past through the Blue Cross when I've had a youngster or something that can't be left alone. Have even loaned an ex-racehorse that couldn't be ridden. I think it depends on the care that the horse would need & why it can't be ridden. If requiring expensive and time consuming care I wouldn't be interested.

Yes I did loan a horse as a companion.I moved from livery to my own place and loaned an older ex racer as a companion. Had him for about 7 yrs until he was pts from aged related problems

I managed to get an ex-broodie with a leg issue a companion home - and she is pushing 17.2  They love her and she is doing a super job. Not my horse, and the home was found through a chance remark I made to someone else. I'm not sure there are many homes like this out there but I'm guessing.

Yes. I am currently borrowing another HHOer's little welshie. She has cushings, and had lami in her previous loan home, so not a total breeze to manage but we think she's a little star. Her owner covers vet costs (incl. her medication) and we feed, trim, worm her etc & provide daily care. She's the perfect companion to my retired mare whom needs a pal to keep her chilled when we take the other two out riding. We absolutely love her, and treat her like one of our own :) :)

Hi, yes when we were looking for a companion horse we were looking to loan or buy. We ended up buying though as we found a lovely horse for loan and the yard and grazing we have was far better than the horse already had but the owner didn't like it for some reason, also she was being really fussy so we thought we'l just buy so we don't have to put up with anyone else.
