Does Anyone Feed Barley Straw

Had the vet out for routine injections Friday to my 4 yr old WB X - he told me that she is borderline obese and to cut down her forage, he suggested that I give her half hay and half barley straw, and to start working her (she is as yet unbroken), so yesterday took her for a really long walk (will do me good too !). I always thought straw was not good to feed but did give it to her last night and she was scoffing it down, she is on shavings bed so doesn't usually get straw. Just wondering if there is any calories in it at all ?

Barley straw is good stuff. Any straw is good really for fatties. It's mainly fibre with low calorific value.

I give mine two flaps of hay each nigh and he chews on his straw bed to his hearts content. I also turn out during day with hay even if there's grass.
