As per question really. I'm not giving my boy anything like that at the moment and he hasn't been worked for the last few days so he's not burning off lots of liquid but he is pretty hot although he has got shade in his field.

I just wondered if anyone else gave electrolytes as a matter of course in the hot weather?

Cheers

You should only need to feed these if they are sweating heavily for a prolonged period. I would feed them after an endurance ride in this weather as the horse would sweat for hours and would need help replacing what has been lost but not if she was just standing in the field.

It's not the heat you have to worry about it's the amount of sweat

we're lucky in that our horse's have a breeze in the field so although it's hot none of them are sweating yet.

Rightly or wrongly we feed a small amount of electrolyte in both the morning and evening feeds at this time of year, regardless of if the horse has been to a competition or not.

That's a really interesting article Anima, thanks for that.

Hmmm, maybe I should add some into his feed on a daily basis - his diet is mainly forage based (he's a sec D) so he could be lacking. He's in relatively light work but he does sweat buckets when worked in the heat (hence he's spent the week being a field ornament) and and tends to sweat quite a lot anyway. He's not sweating in the field - well he's a bit damp on his neck but not horrendous.

Hmmm, food for thought indeed!

I do, I feed daily in both feeds and increase if we're competing - though in this heat and the ground like concrete I think not
