does anyone feed honeychop?

Just bought a bag and done a quick search on here and it looks like I have wasted my money. All I pulled up was posts from people who had problems with their horse and they were all fed honeychop. So is it really that bad? I won't buy it again but as I have it is it ok to feed it, rather than waste the money?

I used to feed it quite a few years ago and never had any sort of problem to speak of!!!

Mine have had honeychop daily to bulk out their mix for donkey's years, and I have never had a problem. I use the same volume of honeychop as of mix, and always add a good dollop of beet pulp as well.

I do, my pony only has a small handful a day with carrots. Never had any problems at all. I may have to search myself now, I havent heard anything bad myself :/

I've fed it to various horses over the years and not had any problems - I would say that on occasion you find big dollops of molasses in it but my lot just view that as a treat.

I do, I add honeychop with grlic to my TB's feed twice a day. Never had any issues with it.

Oh glad I haven't wasted the money then, did a quick tinternet search and all I could find was bad things but you have settled my mind.

I was going to mix it with bluechip original, I'm no feed expert, does that sound ok?

both of mine get it all the time as a small feed with Garlic & oil in it, they dont need feeds but as thhey get a feed everyday then when i need to feed them medications or other supliments its not a "Hmm, shes feeding us. WHY??"

Honeychop is basically molassed chopped straw and is about 11% sugar. It's probably OK fed in small amounts to mix with a balancer or supplements, but I wouldn't feed it to anything with laminitic tendencies and would not want to feed it in significant quantities either. There are much better chaffs available!

Agree with this. I won't feed any kind off mollichaf, honeychaff etc as it's horrid molassed straw and so many behaviour problems stem from feeding sugar when we don't have to. It may be cheap but I would never use it when you can buy better. I keep as much sugar out my childrens diet as I can and do the same for my horses
