I refer to a post i put on further down the page about my eventer and what he is fed!
I just wondered if anyone feeds their horse on fibre alone without anything other than a vitamin supplement?
If so, what do you feed them and what sort of quantities?
I am going to contact an equine nutritionist but just wondered what you guys do

Do pony nuts count as cereal?

If not then yes all of ours event on just fibre. They all get hifi, pony nuts, balancer and sugar beet.

Yep, used to feed just Hi-Fi Lite and Equivite and competed just fine on that - added a small quantity of pony nuts in the height of summer if lacking a bit of oomph, and also in winter along with sugar beet. The mare got maybe a scoop of chaff and less than half of nuts, as she was a fat bloater given half the chance, but rarely lacked speed or power!

I replied on your other post but my ID can work fairly hard on ad-lib hay, luciebix, Saracen ReLeve, instant linseed & Benevit. In fact the problem is keeping the weight off him, if his workload drops his waistline rapidy expands

. He keeps weight on better fed like this than when he was getting cereals & he still has plenty of energy but it's much calmer, more controllable energy.

Yepp mine get no concentrates what so ever,Alfa A Oil,Fibre Beet,Linseed and Vitamins, they look great and are all full of beans
To me concentrates are just fast food for horses, one of mine get Barley Rings since he cant hold the weight so well,IF i give anything different it will always be grains(Oats or Barley) and not nuts or mix

i used to keep my horse at John Poole's yard (he did Badminton years ago, great rider), and all the horses there were fed on a special chaff mix, no cereals or nuts at all, they had a bucket twice a day of this chaff stuff. i was a bit shocked at first, but my lad was just fine on it. John's horse had been round Badminton on just this stuff.
mine all get a mixture of Hi-Fi, Graze On, Alfa, bit of sugar beet, and Baileys Stud Balancer. if they need more condition they get Baileys Condition Cubes, but only 2 have needed those in about 5 years. if they're really flat when eventing, i'll add whole soaked oats.

I know of someone who just fed their horse chaff and vitamins, and the horse evented up to CCI* level. She always looked really well, and of course was mega fit.

I do as I said in the other post. Dengie Alfa Oil is meant to have the same energy level kg/kg as a competition mix.

Yes, I compete my Irish mare on Alfa A and TopSpec Balancer... I just make sure she gets the suggested amount of Alfa a day

My WBxTB, however, tends to lose weight when competing. She used to be on Endurance Mix, but if we ever get to the stage of competing again then I will try to keep her on Alfa A, TopSpec Balancer and Alfa Beat. However, should she need something more, she will go on the Dengie's Fibre Mix.
