More a question for people with older horses I guess, when did yours start going grey?

A horse I was going to buy 2yrs ago for OH ha a very grey face and was getting white flecks on his body, he was 16, yet Lance, who is 19 in Feb, well he is still totally black except for his grey lips!

He gets the odd white hair in his mane, but thats it, so Im wondering how soon I can expect him to start greying more, as it seems most noticable in black horses

you can just see his grey lips in the pic below (excuse OH, he loves the horses!

all the ones she knew anyway

LOL my friend said that to me too, every black horse she has known has been evil or dangerous!

Lance used to be a handful, but he is a good boy now

Boomer's got grey flecks over his body, but it's hard to tell unless you acutally look for them (he's 15) and my old 18 yr old pony had grey all over her face and around her ears.

Ellie is 13 yrs old.

She started getting the odd white hair in her mane around a year ago. This year there's twice as many..

eta: Ellie is the sweetest horse I've ever known..not a mean bone in her body

I have a black pony, but, thankfully, he's not going grey yet - he's only 11!!

Yes. My mare has been going grey around her head since she was eight. She is now 16. She also has a few white spots but that is due to her breeding.

Never had a black horse either so not much help... but on the subject of them supposedly changing colour / greying as they get older.

Jack is 15 now - fleabitten (as you know) and he's not fading at all. In the winter, he does the opposite, he gets REALLY speckly and goes really dark! A girl at the yard the other day commented on how dark he was going and then said "shame they dont stay like that as they get older"

Mines in disgrace atm also... for dragging his groom over in a huge pile of mud and for having several hissy fits while i was riding him earlier.... Mines not growing old gracefully either; he still thinks hes four

My mare is 26, she is slightly grey on her muzzle and on a scar on her bottom, other than that, black in the winter, sunbleached in the summer:

Not black but dark bay and boy must I be driving him grey !! He's only 9 and already has grey hairs popping up in his main and quite a few on his back end when he gets his winter coat.

I have had merlin since he was 5 (now 9) and he has always had grey hairs in his mane and also round his stifle whorls!! He has no grey on his face yet (barring the blaze

But no more now than when he was 5..

When I bought my black cob he was 13 and had a distinct star in white plus a white moustache.

I began to notice the odd white hair on his face when he was about 20 and over the years his star has become more fuzzy round the edges and grey hair now extends up to the forelock. Apart from the odd one under the jawline he is still pretty well as black as the day I bought him.

My black mare is 15 and this summer has grown the odd white hair on the underside of her mane, but nothing else.
Seeing a big picture of Lance has made me realise that not only does my Ramiro B mare look just like your bay, my black mare is a Lance lookalikey too!!

My 17 year old is getting a few flecks in his coat. He has quite a bit in his mane and tail but that is through rubbing it every summer with sweet itch

Both have NEVER had a rug on in their lives & have lived out for all of it even it winter! They go out to a wood with field for winter break!

My mare is black...19 years old tb...all she has is a really tiny white star. She has now, over the last year, got single white hairs on her tummy...you can only see them when you get really close and they are individual not clumped together.
Everyone has always remarked that she is a very complete black horse...I think some do get grey on them gradually..maybe it relates back to the parentage?
Either way...black horses are fab!!!

Someone else has said that too (that black horses are evil). My horse is black, he is 8 and gets the odd grey hair in his mane and tail. He trys to be evil!!! He pulls evil faces when you approach his stable but doesnt do anything, just false threats but I admit I was wary off him when I first bought him as it was a shock from my loving mare. Hes a big softy really.
He also has a quirky nature, is spooky and very irrational, making a big deal out of things but I'd never part with him.
He was nicknamed the Black B****** at my old yard
