The Redwings post got me thinking how we all are supposed to save for our old age but what about our equines? So many are passed on because people can't afford the bills of an older horse.

My boy is nearly 7 and I don't have a pension fund for him as I just don't have the spare cash, hopefully one day I will though I am positive I could find the money for him one way or the other if necessary. Does any one else actually put money away so they can keep them in their old age?!

I had an account that was just for whatever my old horse needed, not a pension as such though.

Im quite happy to keep my old duffers around the place though, happy to make room for them. I know not everyone is so lucky, if I didnt have room for the odd oldie, Id have them PTS, regretfully but sensibly I think.

We are looking into buying a field in the near future. Somewhere to keep horsey when he gets old and a bit of a pension for us seeing as now I won't get mine til I'm 68! Not sure about a fund for possible vets bills etc due to old age - hadn't thought of that. I probably ought to start...
I know my friend cancelled her horse's insurance due to exclusions (he is 17) and is just putting the insurance money into a bank account now to pay for whatever he needs as he gets older.

Yes, I suppose I have. I also cancelled my insurance last year when horse reached 16 and I have put some funds aside for his welfare. My job is likely to end this year and I won't find another that's as well paid (if I can find one at all) so I thought I should make sure funds are earmarked for my horse's wellbeing.

I made the decision not to insure also my girl is 19 and if I break down the vets bills we have had over the years it comes to £100 a year ! Insurance was £345 a year so I now save £100 a month - I know that seems a lot but I feel better knowing it is there ! I feel differently about her now too - she is amazing and I love her but if something came along where I had to put her through massive surgery and a years box rest I don't think I would do it ! She'd hate it and me although I have the money there for if it is needed.
