Does anyone have a Shogun?

I'm considering a 2001 model 3.2 SWB diesel to replace my crappy xtrail which has given up the ghost.

However, apparently the Shoguns also have problems with the dual mass flywheel (same thing that's gone in my xtrail) so I don't want to replace one problem car with another!

Looking for any information good or bad on these cars especially when they are being used for towing as I do tow quite a lot during the spring/summer and need something that can take the strain of regular towing which the xtrail seems to have struggled with.

Many thanks!

What is the dual mass flywheel?
I have a J reg LWB Shogun that is still going. It is very slow now and we don't use it to tow more then one horse in a 510 as we have another 4x4 for towing. It still goes off road though and can pull itself out of some very deep mud.
When I can afford a new car I'm going to get another shogun, SWB.

Hate to hijack the thread. Considered buying a Land rover disco? The shogun is rated to maximum 3.2 tonnes, shogun sport 3.3 tonnes and the shogun pinin a mere 1.8 tonnes. The discos are all 3.5 tonnes. Parts are way cheaper and easier to get hold of too.

Just a thought.

Might want to check this out - http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/owners-rev...sion=&body=

The common thing is the MPG. Doesn't look brilliant. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure on the technical bits but basically older cars have a solid flywheel which seems to be pretty indestructable - newer cars are being fitted with a dmf as it makes the drive smoother but also has a habit of overheating in some cars and wrecking the clutch leading to a bill of about £1k to repair it - your car probably has the older flywheel - it seems that it's a reasonably new invention that most mechanics seem to absolutely hate!

i have had a 2002 shogun 3.2 swb for nearly a year now, love it love it love it

we have 2 shogans and have had them for years.good hardy cars.good towing.only fault weve had in 2 different ones was the fuel pump.went wrong on 2 differnt cars.got a spare part on ebay for 50pds.goes a dream now.pajero are good to but need to shop round for insurance

sweettooth - can I ask how old your models are? I think it's mainly the post 2000 ones with the new flywheel - one good thing I have heard is that spares are pretty easy and cheap to come across!

Yep, the DMFW has become a problem. I think it is possible to detect when it is about to go, according to my husband, but he would avoid them if possible.

I WAS a Shogun owner, until Friday when my trusty 20 year old went to the great knackers yard, still driving sweetly and pulling well, but the trouble was the petrol consumption which was about 12 mph. The older ones were a lot better built than the new models but built at a time when petrol was a lot cheaper.

I love my shogun, really reliable & I'm very bad at looking after him & remembering to put oil & stuff in. Never had anything wrong except new tyres & some steering pin thing, way nicer to drive than a Disco which makes your ears bleed, tows like a dream & when he dies I'm getting another one.

Thanks everyone! Lots to consider!

How do you find them for fuel consumption for day to day driving - I do about 120 - 150 miles per week and it's all short journey so want to make sure it's feasible to run this car. My xtrail 2.2 costs me about 30 per week and is supposed to get 40 mph but I don't find it that economical tbh and worry that the Shogun might be a nightmare on fuel!

TBH we have a disco and Love towing with it. I have 2 big horses and an old wooden 3 horse trailer. I still get 20mpg when I'm towing on little country roads.

day to day driving I get 35ish to the gallon, 500miles out of a tank. drives nicely, comfortable, reliable and only thing we've replaced on it is the brakes.

And it's P reg, and we paid £2k for it. Only downside is that's a particularly camp shade of turquoise!

I have a Range Rover and a Shogun, for comfort I prefer the Range Rover, however the Shogun is much nicer to drive and its handling is much better. I really dislike the air suspension which we are actually changing this week to normal coil springs.

If I had a choice I would go Shogun over other 4x4's out there, they are tough and seem to run forever ;-)

My Range Rover is always having issues, my sister has a less than one year old RR Sport that spends most of its time at the dealership being repaired for electrical issues. You don't get that with a Shogun!
