I'm considering taking my boy barefoot and have googled and found 2 trimmers that cover my area:- Caroline Forrester (based in Spalding I think) and Jackie Sansom www.phenomenalhooves.co.uk. As I don't know either of these I wondered if anyone here did and could recommend either/both of them? Thanks

I agree - after all, it's what he's trained many, many years to do

You might not get as good a response with your farrier doing a grass trim however you may find some barefoot trimmers that are farriers retrained. This subject can cause a variable ammount of conflict and when I took my Mare barefoot dealing with people's opinons was difficult. I have used Sarah Braithwaite who has pioneered the movement in the UK and truely believes in what she does she has a book out called 'feet first' which is worth a read along side any of Jamie Jacksons books. Visit her website performancebarefoot.co.uk this will offer some guidance + you could always email her for advice on a local trimmer I am sure she would not mind.

I do not deny that farriers train for many years to learn their trade that is hundreds of years old and some of them do amazing work ,are never late, never rude and never hit your horse when it nips his bum - but horses managed just fine before them (even if he does have a nice bum)

Rafael, the 2 trimmers you mentioned are both KC LaPierre DAEP accredited. This is a respected qualification, so you can be assured you're not dealing with any of the shadier characters who operate in this area. My trimmer is a DAEP and I have total confidence in him. DAEPs have to commit to ongoing training and they represent the name of KC LaPierre so you can be sure he would not allow standards that would not uphold his reputation. I hope this helps.

I'm afraid I have to disagree there brightmount. KC LaPierre holds no responsibility for those who have trained with him. There's no governing body, he simply provides a list of those who have completed his 'qualifications.'
The DAEP who wrecked my horse's feet had not been 'trained' to trim young horse's feet, having only completed the Level 1 degree, but because there is no governing body, trimmers can do as they like. The ONLY comeback on a DAEP is that they may be removed as an active member of the IAEP site if they are seen to cause harm.

Quote taken from an e-mail from KC La Pierre himself, earlier this year:
"We are not a governing body, and have no jurisdiction over our graduates. We do not dictate, discipline, or have control over business practices. We do maintain an alumni group where each member agrees to take an oath to “Do No Harm”. The only power this gives IAEP is that we may take action in response to accusations that harm was done by an active DAEP, and if we determine that the claim is valid we may remove the member as an active member from our site. "

To the OP, PLEASE research thoroughly before using a 'barefoot trimmer.' I stupidly didn't, and my horse suffered because of it. I had to enlist a remedial farrier to repair the damage caused to my horse's feet by the DAEP.
I'm sure, just like farriers, there are good trimmers and bad trimmers, but please be very, very careful.
