We have a huge rabbit problem at the yard - it's got so bad even the dogs won't chase them anymore

We had someone out with his ferrets last year but once he realised how many there were he took his ferrets and ran

We can't have someone out to shoot them because the yard is too small and it's too close to the horses...

Yes I have 23 of them but don't live anywhere near you I am afraid. It all depends on where the warrens are established to be honest as to the effectiveness of ferreting. If in hedgerows it can be hard. It may be best to try a double pronged attack and use long netting techniques as well as purse netting the holes.
I do know people that ferret personally but they are too far away from you. You could try putting an ad in a paper like countryman's weekly or getting in touch with them because they have a lot of stories about ferreting and maybe able to put you in touch with the right people in your area.
Good luck and btw they make good eating too if you get chance to have some, it's just the paunching that is the worse job.

Most of them live in the banks around the school - the little bu**ers seem to think it's amusing to dig up the school and run away with the lining

Dear Zalacca/Oatcake. We have exact same problem. Love little bunnies but not when they dig holes big enough to break a leg in. We are also right next to a busy main road so shooting not really an option and plan to build a manege on top of their little 'ghetto' so need to get them under control. We are near Henley in Arden if you have any ideas.

Hiya Custardsmum I would suggest the same really as I have to Zalacca in that it may be worth contacting any ferret clubs in your area. Or place an ad in the Countryman's Weekly newspaper or even ring them to see if they know of anyone in your area. They do enough articles on ferreting so I would imagine that they should know one or too peeps. Long netting may be an idea too, as dogs or ferrets can be used to flush them out into awaiting nets across the field. I do know that hawks are sometimes used to catch rabbits as well when flushed by ferrets so some bird of prey enthusiasts may also be worth a try. In your case though Custardsmum the fact that you are near a main road may put the dampeners on a hawk being used though, but purse and long netting should be fine. I think many ferreting people would relish the opportunity to work a warren especially when seeking permission to hunt on people's land can be hard to obtain in some cases.
I can have a search around and see what I come up with for either location but in the mean time the sports/hunting paper may be a good call to make.

can you not get someone in to gas them???

they wanted a small fortune to have it done - plus don't really want the smell of dead bodies...

I have just joined the hunting life online forum and placed a link to this thread on there ( in the ferreting section) and asked people if they can help to either join on here and get in touch or else pm me through the hunting forum and I can then pass on contact details to you both. Hope that is ok?

Hello i am also a member of the hunting life forum and live in kent if anybody has any rabbit problems they would like taking care of i have ferrets nets and dogs and would love some more permision, if anyone is interested please give me a pm if your not to far away thanks BEN....

hi all, Im a moderator on thehuntinglife, and also a member of the national ferret register, for any of you that has problems with rabbits, the NFR have a list of ferreters throughout the country, willing to clear rabbits for free, just google the name and have a look under rabbit clearance
although someone here has suggested "gassing" apart from it not being done "free of charge" but there is no way of knowing, how many, if any have been gassed, just make sure that anyone who offers you help, has full public liabilty insurance, and knows what they are doing, the last thing you'd want is hoards of people coming to your area's, on the whim of free permission,
of course anyone within the essex area, that would want help, be it a one off, or regularly, they only need to ask
