Does anyone have to hack in not great areas?

Lots of questions today guys, hope you don't mind :)

I have recently moved my horse home, the only problem with home being we have no safe hacking. The road outside the farm is sometimes used as a through road and boy-racers DO like to cart down it at speed on an evening.

As such it has put me off hacking out, especially as my 6YO while good, needs a little encouragement sometimes...

Anyway so looking for some ideas and opinions please, I have seen someone hack round here and would have done so myself without issue on previous horses (older and wiser) so should I deck myself out like a christmas tree and go early (circa 7.30/8am) OR should I err on the side of caution and not bother?

Mare could really do with some slow road work now and bringing back into fitness and the farm, while big is all undulating and hilly - not great for unfit fatso!

I would be cautious about hacking out at 7.30/8 am as this time is likely to be busy, it is the "busiest" (using the term lightly as lanes are quiet around here) time of day where we are.

Do you have the option to hack out late morning/early afternoon?

When you get round to hacking take some pictures, Clover is gorgeous! :D
 
about 2pm is best time for the roads near me ..or 10am.. just missing work/school dash. Sunday is usually good too :)

If you feel its too dangerous.. dont bother! or take a nanny horse with you? even someone on a bike?!

hmm phish food... can it be your fault Im being naughty when dieting??? :)
 
Just a note, i tend to find the boy racers the best at slowing down and giving wide berth, possibly due to the hazard perception tests they now do, or the fact they like there car without a horse dent in it. Maybe go out with someone on bike and be very visable, you may be surprised.
 
sounds very similar to the road i have to hack on to get to anywhere:rolleyes: the farm entrance is right in the middle of a long straight stretch too so they're really going some when they pass. I hi-vis right up and apart from an incident with a lorry last year i've never had any major problems. Hi-vis seems to be the key though, the day i couldn't be bothered was the day the lorry didn't see us until the last minute:o

Ok to answer a few points:

I can hack out anytime to suit really :) As for nanny horses, sadly there aren't any nearby (not even a livery in this town) but a bike could work, might actually be good as oH is keen to get mobile!

The plan was to box places, however its my OH with the trailer license and I feel bad sometimes putting on him and nagging to go out (I wanted a box but seen as it was a gift I couldn't be ungrateful) however I think even if it was twice a week (there's some lovely hacking about 5 mins away) that might help.

I would just go with someone on a bike. I think everyone knows how hideous my hacking is here and I've never had too much problem. It's amazing how quickly they get used to it, especially if you stay calm and they can draw some confidence from you. A few boy racers are the least of my worries, wanna swap? Especially if we can swap horses too. She looks really well! :)
 
Blooming on a grass and no-work diet isn't she? Not quite like the trim fitster she was in my avatar hey!! Well looks like its time to put OH to work!!:D
 
She would look gawjus if you didn't brush her for a year and she rolled in pig poo. She is so pretty!

I'm sure your OH will be ecstatic to get to spend some quality time with you and get some exercise all at once. What more can a man want?
 
we're smack bang in the middle of an old mining village where every driver seems to be an idiot/boy racer!! i go out with my girl on the rare occassion she hacks out, her on the hoss me on the bike. Most of the time she just rides in the field or we can load up & go a few miles to our local wood or go a bit further (about an hour) & go to the beach, where she can have a good few hours of fun!!:D:D

I think he'd do anything for a quiet life atm, I'm being a bit of a pain :o but we'll get it nailed soon i hope!

My hackings awful here from home too so I actually don't bother! Purely because my two have separation anxiety so I either have to ride and lead or have a very nappy horse! My road is a cut through also and the traffic should be a 30 but they fly through, including tractors and noisy machinery! If I turn left I can go into the large, bustling village with cars parked everywhere, dogs loose, peacocks roaming! It's a nightmare and I have to turn around and come back on myself!!!! If I turn right I'm at a crossroad onto a main a road at the bottom of a hill! That's not fun to cross either!!! Plenty do hack out around here though but my boys are slight nut jobs and I'm lucky to have a ménage and fields! If i was to hack out though I would wear lots of hiviz!
