It's extremely expensive and you have to be a very good shot -it's much harder than pheasant shooting ( not sure what Breezes Benefactor is going on about.)
Either you walk up or you stand in buts and the birds are driven over.
There are good years and bad years - i.e. sometimes there are a lot of birds on a moor and sometimes not. The weather in the spring and early summer makes a difference.
Anyway, if you're going you'll have a great time - it's exciting and demanding.

Hello, I am newsville tennessee So, hello.
I would concur with all of the above. Grouse shooting is more expensive than a lot of other game shooting due to its geographical limitations and the reliance on 'mother nature' to produce favourable conditions.

Grouse shooting is expensive because grouse are not reared and released like pheasant poults are. As a result it entirely depends on moor management, weather and the disease burden as to whether the broods survive the winter.
Grouse moors are important natural habitats - the RSPB do not allow shooting on their moorland and as a result there is very little variety of wildlife - a typical grouse moor is a thriving ecosystem where predators are controlled by beat keepers, the bracken is kept down so the heather can thrive properly and support a range of species.
Economically this activity pumps millions into the rural economy.
As far as the technicalities go - the shooting can be walked up or driven - driven involves standing in a butt and firing, while beaters move the birds in front of the guns, and walked up is where the guns walk the moor themselves. The shooting is supposed to be very challenging. I've never been - I'm a lousy shot over clays and anyway wouldn't have the spare change to go!
