Does anyone know what breed this could be?

We were in the car today and passed a couple walking with a really unusual dog. We both thought it was a Landseer as we were approaching - it was huge, even by Newfie standards, and dark brown or black, with white patches and that gorgeous very thick and silky hair (obviously very well groomed). As we got closer though we saw it had a spitz like face with small triangular upright ears and an upwards curling tail. It had a cheerful face though, not like an Akita 'inscrutable' face. I've been googling Newfie x Akita/Husky/Malamute etc but the Newfie floppy ears always seem to win so I think I'm on the wrong track.

Any ideas?

A black and white Canadian Eskimo dog? Not many of these about though and not as big as a newfie!

Thanks. Just had to google Bucovina as I'd never heard of them, but no - heavier set and much more hair, and with the happy Teddy bear spitz face. Much larger than a Bernese and wrong colour, although similar shine to the coat. The Canadian Eskimo dog is the closest, although not close enough! I wish I'd jumped out of the car and accosted the owners now - I bet they wouldn't have minded!

A Caucasian Ovcharka? Sometimes depending on how their ears are cropped they can have small triangular ears. A friend has 2, and one was cropped (she got her that way, out of an unfortunate situation), and she looks like a Bear, sort of.

If you imagine it was like this

With a face like this (only to match the rest of the dog)

That's the only way I can describe it ?

Now then, I just googled Caucasian Ovcharka and yes it was similar, different ears but I'd never thought about cropped ears. It's certainly a possibility, size and coat texture is right ✅

Sorry just found this again, I seem to have turned my notifications off somehow ...

Like a Tibetan Mastiff but the wrong face. And I had to Google Karakachan because that's another one I've never heard of, but no not that either.

We have a Pyrenean Mountain Dog (No 3) and in comparison it was similar height but had a much chunkier appearance, possibly because it had so much hair, I mean that kind of hair that's really silky but very dense and heavy.

As far as I know, Tibetan Mastiffs are only allowed to have a little white on the chest, and paws, so far from as much white as on a Landseer.

Even a Molosser breed where they might crop the ears, I presume they would be cropped too low down to give a Spitz impression. So I'm guessing it was a cross of some sort, body of a Molosser dog breed, and Spitz head.

They look gorgeous ?, but according to Google, and Wikipedia, the max height for male dogs are 59 centimetres. I had ruled out Laikas because the largest I know of is East Siberian Laika with a max height for males at 66 centimetres, which I thought was still too small to be described as big even for a Newfie in size?

I just googled Yakutian Laika. Aren't they gorgeous? Yes too small, but the very same Teddy bear happy face.

I've been googling caucasian/Malamute crosses because I can imagine someone might think it would be a really good idea to make a giant dog with a face like a wolf, but it's not right. The dog I saw had a face like the above, not like a wolf.

Must have been a cross of some kind though if no-one can come up with a breed. If I ever see it again I will jump out of the car and ask!

I used to know a Great Pyrenees x Malamute that sounds similar to what you describe.

The coat colour was the same as the Pyrenees but malamute type texture and volume

It could have been one of these. I've just googled and although there's not much to go on they do seem to vary quite a bit.
