It's great fun!! Ive just finished my first season HDT, came third in my last event, and looking forward to next season already! I ride and drive my pony, and the thing that took longest with me was learning the distance I had to leave to get round something!!

Here's my boy- feel free to PM me any questions!

Practicing obstacles-

And showing some lengthened strides!

Done a tiny bit of driving with some of the cobs on the back, but none personally.

Very excited however as my baby coblet is being broken to drive next summer :D

I bought a Shettie X when we couldn't find a nice horse for my daughter. She was cheap and came with a cart, one of my best decisions ever! We have such fun, we're doing our second season indoor trials and loving it. It's great for small ponies to have a real job to do. Just a word of warning, I've been robbed twice in 2 years, driving gear's even more appealing to undesirables than riding stuff. Good luck, keep us updated.

I hope you have great fun ..... driving can be a wonderful experience ;)

what you will get from your first lessons I suppose depends partly on whether you have actually sat in a carriage before or not...... some folk love it but some do find it unsettling being so far away with long reins and no seat / legs as aids ;)

If you have actually been in a carriage and know what its like you might forgo having just a little ride around in a carriage first and get right down to it. Some instructors start right at the beginning and do the harnessing up telling you the names of all the harness parts and saying what they do etc ...... some then give some instruction on holding reins with the reins on a pully system so you can practice on that and not the horse............ some just do it straight to the horse.

Sometimes the type of lesson you get depends on the particular discipline the instructor favours... I found it very different a showing driver to a driving trials driver for example as well as just personality differences.

However learning how to steer at walk will feature probably :D
Some places you will stay in field / arena for quite a while, some will take you out and about quite quick.

Hope that provides some information even if it cant be exact ........just like riding really ........... instructors differ ;)

oh and this is my driving coblet

I have groomed at driving events for a few years, we used to go years ago and when we went again about 5 years ago a lot of the drivers we knew were still competing.
I love driving and Roger is broken to drive, i don't get out very often with him as i don't have anyone to backstep for me.
Who are you having a lesson with? PM me i you don't want to say on here.
