Does anyone own a shire or shire x cob? Would be interested in hearing about them and seeing photos. I have researched history of Shires and spoken to our local vet about Shires but also would like to hear from Shire or Shire x owners please.:)
 
I had one lost him last year after 25 years of being together. He was the most agreeable loveable chap you could find. He was hit up the back end by a car as a five year old but even then I could take him out in the heaviest traffic and he would not bat an eye lid at anything.

He was the type of horse anyone could have got on and ridden no matter what level they were and he would have looked after them. They are great horses with lovely characters and temperments to die for.

I miss him so much it hurts.

Totally agree, ours is the sort your old Granny could ride or small child. The more novice the better.

Down sides are, he eats alot, bridles handmade, shoes can cost alot more.
 
MY very good friend has a shire x cob mare (coloured).
Nice big mare, scopey movement, the shire really stands out when they ride showing classes! Lovely powerful horse, can go all day, very loving.

She won't mind me posting this as has been posted here before - I'll point her in your direction!

One of mine is 1/3 shire. Dam is Shire x Clydesdale and Sire is a Welsh D. He's only 22 months old so obviously I can't comment on his riding but he is darling :D I am a little obsessed with him to be honest, althought as he is reaching his terrible two's stage he is becoming a bit of b****r at the mo, but I know when he's finally broken he will look after me very well.

I definitely recommend!
 
Out of all mine he is the one that will wait whilst the others pelt past you to go inside, he knows he is big and poweful yet you could walk him on a piece of cotton and he would never pull.
 
Meet Little Ted, by a large cob stallion out of a pure shire mare. 17 months at present.

Have a read of the thread 'My next equine project' for Ted's story. He is kind, gormless, growing like a weed on fertilizer and eats a lot.
 
I used to ride two. One was a full shire- gentle giant but so strong she used to accidently lift me off my feet if she put her head up while i was holding onto her headcollar. Other one was a shire x cob and was a great hack. You could put nervous old women on him and he would plod, but stick a lively child on him he would gallop and pop over logs.
Currently have a suffolk x welsh :) shes 32
 
I have a clydesdale x traditional cob called Teddy 2 Shoes (not a shire sorry!). He's just turned 2 and growing like a mushroom. Here's a pic of him in June. This was his 1st show as a 2 yr old.......

He's had a bit of a growing spurt since that pic and looks quite leggy at the minute...bit like an old fashioned hunter type. Not traditional at all!
 
This is a piccie of my mare who is shire x TB (her dam is full shire 18hh and her sire is T/B (Nickel King).

She is very sweet natured and extremely good to handle on the whole but can have some 'thoroughbred' moments when ridden and out and about as she's not the most confident horse but she's great to be around in the yard/stable and well mannered. (She's 17hh).

I've known one, he was fab but if they become bored or you repeat things with them constantly (he was at a college being ridden up to 3 hours a day) he switched off completely and became the most nappy horse I've met in my life and you can't make a 16,3hh chunk of a horse move if it doesn't want to! Once he had been home a couple of years and had some training and a good blast cross country he became the horse he was before college again :)
 
I used to work with Shires and I rode out the shire stallion as it was the easiest way to exercise him. It was like sitting on a big comfy sofa, but if he decided he didn't want to do something then we didn't do it! One time he didn't want to go further on our ride, but neither did he want to go back, so we just sat in the lane for half an hour until he decided he wanted to move! We used to get lots of funny looks and strangely cars always slowed down when passing us!

That reminds me of the time when my mare was about 5 years old and fairly recently backed etc - on a hack we met with a drainpipe half way along and she did not want to go past it at all - I think we were 'situated' for at least an hour, just standing there, before she would go past it!

She still doesn't like drainpipes!
 
I have a shire x TB (though presumably a dash of something else as well to get the colour ;))

She is an absolute saint and I trust her with anything. She took me round a xc course after I had sworn never to jump again, two weeks ago she scored 64.9% with me in Novice dressage, and last weekend gave a 7 year old girl her first horse-ride...

Big Thank you to everyone posting to my thread. All the horses are stunning and the info is of great interest as I own a colt foal - in fact looking at Little Ted is like looking at my little man and he is also out of a shire mare but his father is, lets say, unknown but 'presumed cob' as he came from a cob dealer.I have seen his mother and she is lovely but her fate is sadly at the dealers hands.His past before me is sad but he is so kind and a loving little man to what he has been through and hearing from other owners confirms to me he has alot of shire personality.:) Unfortunately I am not sure how to post a piccie of him.
Love to continue to hear all info and see your piccies.:)
 
We had our Shire pts last year,he was 23/24 and 17.2, i rode him (i am about 5,4) and drove him (see sig) and he was the best horse i have ever owned or had anything to do with! He could be a bit quirky and liked to test you, but he didnt have a bad bone in his body, i would get another Shire tomorrow if i could!!
