does anyone here part own a horse, for instance with a family member or partner? How does it work out-has anyone had any problems doing this? Thanks

Me :D Me and my little sister share, although im the boss and do most things :p With our last horse we had a rota for riding; Tues - sis, wed - lunge, thur - me, fri-me, sat-sis, sun- sis warm up, me jump. She would groom while i mucked out as she doesnt do it right lol But with the new baby shes a bit scared of her so shes just hacking her once a week, which kinda works for me as i like a routine but it will change when she gets her confidence back. I think it works out fine if you's have similar thoughts and arent greedy ;) We used to argue alot as i must admit i am the older, WISER (ok i just made myself lol there ;) ) bossy one and like things done properly!! You would probably want to slap me if you seen me instruct little sister, kinda went like this; "MORE LEG ... NOOOO WHAT ARE YOU AT ... CIRCLEEEE ... IM GOING TO CHASE YOU WITH A WHIP ... MORE LEG ... HEAD!!!" But i must admit after years of this i have learnt to chill and be nice to little one as shouting doesnt work :o

I do, I share/part own B with my best friend and her daughter in law. It works well but I think that's because I've known them both a long time and we all want the best for horse.

I'm the main rider ATM but that is because my BF is waiting for back surgery so can't ride ATM and her daughter in law is a novice so isn't happy to ride him on her own so I walk out with her or give her lessons in field. We all help with the care side of it and financially xx

I shared with my dad.. luckily for me, he decided my horse wasn't right for him and bought his own :D

We alternated days and then shared one so the horse got 2 days off

Yes, with a 'friend' and it's been a nightmare. We bought a horse together last year, he wasn't suitable, threw me badly twice so we arranged a very successful swap with a more capable ( foolhardy!) friend. We got a lovely, rising 4 horse in return, my beloved Teddy. He obviously needs a lot of ongoing work, wouldn't even pick his feet up without lashing out. Anyway, she's done bugger all, not even given him a brush. I've got a now very polite boy, just starting to hack out, going really well, all my hard work. She asked me recently to take her share of him, I told her to think about it, she kept asking to I said yes, so now he's all mine. However, she now has a great idea, I pay for his rent and keep, then when she's more financially secure she'll take her share back....er no, you won't. I've paid all farrier fees, feed, wormers, and vaccs and I have his passport so she can whistle.
Obviously it can work, particularly with a family member, but with a friend, caution, you can't trust anyone.

One of mine has been on loan to a friend for years now, he went to her as a hack when he retired from competition. I changed the passport a couple of years back so he is now in joint names, I did this rather than gift him to her as he was very special to me and I wanted to keep a say in his future as he does have a lot of age related issues now and this way, although I trust my friend totally with his care, I think she will find it very hard to "make the decision" when the time comes and this way I retain partial control over that decision.

That's interesting, I had a similar arragement for a while with same 'friend who I part owned with. She shared my mare for about 2 years, seemingly very dedicated and trustworthy so when she asked if she could buy her I agreed for a nominal fee. I so regret it, I still have the mare with me, which I'm glad about as she has really let the horse ( and me ) down. Anyway, don't want to clog this up with my woes, i'll save that for a thread of my own lol. Glad it's worked for you though, i've obviously missjudged this girl badly.
