My husband is home at the moment and has been coming down to the yard with me to help with mucking out etc.

After 2 days he gave up & said he would pay for someone to muck out for me as it's such an awful job! I have graciously declined as I would really rather do it myself - I know exactly how I like it and apart from not feeling great about asking someone else to do it I think I would just be frustrated if they didn't do it 'my way' especially if they were getting paid. I just know I would be fiddling with things even if they did a great job!

Does anyone actually have an arrangement whereby they pay someone to do this and if so how do you find it?

i feel the same.. i hate not getting to the yard and people making feeds/hay or mucking out a differnt way it and coming back and things might be different.... but i have payed for it and my yard did do a good job actully :)

I am on part livery so someone else does muck out my horses. OK I would revert to my preferred style if I was doing it myself but have to compromise. Biggest thing is enough bedding but my yard are good about that and if I feel I need some more I will just chuck it in. I skip out and tidy up anyway when I have finished them in the evenings regardless - seems unatural to walk away and leave them with a messy bed!

Puts hand up.....

I do, have have done for a few years now.
It started off just on the days I worked to save time in the evenings,
But even though the person was better than most, I found myself
Checking and changing things. I even got my mum
To 'spy' to check my babies were being done properly.
Mostly they were.

I now have 2 of them on full livery, and though they are at
A top yard and in good care, I still have one at home - partly due to cost
But to give them a rest and proper TLC a few times a year.

You will NEVER be satisfied - so beware. But maybe consider someone
Mucking out a few times a week to ease things for you?

I would have to pay someone privately as I'm not on a yard where assistance is an option so I would have to advertise.

My husband thinks I'm mad not to do it but I really would rather do it myself - actually I'd rather not do it at all & can't wait for spring when they will be turned out!

Maybe I'm just too picky & don't think anyone will do it as well as I'd like

I've got my horse on livery, so yes I pay for him to be mucked out.
Some things I am fussy about, but mucking out isn't one of them. As long as the bed is relatively clean and there is sufficient bedding then I am more than happy to let someone else to the dirty work! After all, all they do is poo and wee on it!

I was going to ask the same question - ish - my horse was ment to be going into livery first week in Jan but she has cancelled on me as her horses are in and now room for him. My mum owns a farm so he is on his own, where would I find someone who can turn out, muck out, feed and bring in? he is only a youngster so needs to be confident and experianced? any ideas?? we are book to go away for 4 nights. Greater Manchester , also whats the going rate?

I do, but I'm on an assisted DIY yard it would be different if I had to get someone in. I usually like to do the mucking out myself and pay for other bits if I'm pushed for time (like poo-picking!), but I've been ill and have had all the mucking out done for me for the last month. I'm picky too and it's not the same as doing it yourself, but it's great to have the option.

re: going rate
My horse is on part livery in East Anglia which means he is turned out and brought in for me and fed twice. Fields are also poo picked and my hay, straw and hard feed inc. Normally i do the mucking out (and usually one set of feeding and turning/bringing if light allows) as the yard owner is trying to retire and not do too much. If i pay for a muck out its usually 2 pounds but admittedly thats a couple of years back and its also a pretty keenly priced yard so I would expect to pay more now. Think you could easily pay up to a fiver a time. Hope that helps

Hi I'm in greater manchester, so depending where you are I could help you

my horses are on diy but there is a girl at yard who offers a service and can I say she is my guardian angel - yes she charges but its worth it for when i cant get there and im fussy who handle my horses esp baby given her problems but christine is a lovely kind caring girl who treats other horses like her own - who are beautifully cared for. i know she would never shout smack or raise a hand to my 2 . When i did my back in earlier in year and was on morphine for 8 weeks(further 2 months not being able to get to yard if no one could take me) knowing that christine was there caring for my 2 took pressure of me - she is worth every penny I pay her and truelly a kind girl and baby and big lad love her :)

When I was looking for someone before I moved to a livery yard,
I asked around other local yards, and feed/tack shops are good places to start.
Some people advertise, but word of mouth is best.

I expect to pay £10 a day for a turn out/bring in, feed and muck out. Per horse, or you can arrange per hour. About £6 was the going rate.

Just to clarify I would only be paying somebody to muck out, do hay & water and s/he wouldn't be involved with my horses in any way. Aside from the fact I'm too fussy & would probably be nit-picking about how they did things, but I also feel a bit ....arrogant (for want of a better word) in advertising for someone purely to muck out.

My husband is still going on about it & offering to pay but I just can't do it. Perhaps I am mad like he keeps telling me!

before my back went i was setting my own equine service business up had got 4 clients and charged between £8 and £10 per hour - before back went I would not dream of asking anyone to do my 2 but lesson learnt that yes im fussy to handling of them but hey there are some damn good ppl out there and like said my guardian angel allows me to have odd weekend away with my fella and like last night when car broke down i knew they would be sorted and cared for with a cuddle to :) few ppl i allow to handle baby but christine shes a pure angel :)

its only *****!! its not as if mucking out gives you a better relationship with the horse or anything.
Ive been the mucker outer and Ive been the livery and as long as someone does a good job everything is A ok with me.

I'm paid £20 every sunday to m/o 2 horses and a pony on a private yard and to poo pick the fields when I bring the neds in later in afternoon. Been working there nearly 8 years and it takes max 2.5 hours out of my day. I have free rein to ride either horse if I want too.

It pays for my petrol every week, good way of earning myself some pocket money and really helps out YO as her son is very active and is often attending sports games etc

My OH does my mucking out for me so that I have more time to ride - ain't he just great :D

And, yes, he does a better job than me :) and I don't pay him ;)

I pay a girl £8 an hour to do my stables. I go over to the yard feed, rug and turn out and she pops in sometime in the morning to muck out.

It frees my time to ride each morning, its great!!!
