I used to ride western many years ago and my farrier has a QH and rides western under WES. We always chat about western stuff and it has inspired me to start training my youngster some western moves. She already will back the length of the school with no resistance, so has got me thinking.

I want to do English riding mainly, but wondered if anyone else rides both disciplines?

I only want to do pleasure, trail and versatility. I remember that western shows are an all day/ all weekend thing. Used to do 6 classes in a day! I dont want to do that again, but the bits I enjoyed were pleasure and trail.

Any fellow westerners??

I'm American and always rode Western, I'm intending to break Mo to the Western discipline, but I'm wondering if its possible to teach him both :S That might be too confusing, I'm not sure yet, but will go with the trainer's advice on that I think.

I find Western much more comfortable and I think Mo would look stunning in western gear :)

I don't..only ever tried it once, but a Canadian friend of ours does both, on the same horse. He's a little Boerperd, and does dressage, then she'll switch gear and do her western stuff too..he seems to understand the difference I think

Used too, I think my current pone would suit one or the other and, since I lean towards English a lot more (and get a lot of support for it from family/friends) he's my english horse :D
If I had the money though, I'd be keen on buying another to have for western.

our horse is trained to do hunter under saddle and hunt seat equitation as well as western disciplines such as trail, western riding, horsemanship. we also used our previous horses for school dressage too but gave that up as being too stressful (for humans not horses!). when i go to a show now with my daughter's horse i only do trail and showmanship at the moment and will do one other discipline when i am ready. i really enjoy being there all day or weekend as its great to chat to everyone and watch them all too. thats the great thing about western, the cameraderie.
