Does anyone sedate their horses to be shod?

As title post,
Do you have to sedate your horses to be shod? What do you use, how much do you use, and how big is your horse?
My horse had an abcess in his back foot, and was very very lame on it, farrier come up today to put the shoe back on and he would not let him do anything with his back feet except pick them up, he tried both and couldnt get near him. He said only thing I can suggest it sedating him.

As we tried to twitch him but didnt do anything. So any ideas anyone, he is never like this but need to sedate him, just wondering how much people use, or might just get the vet out, but its a callout of 50 pound on its own

so as you can tell I have had a stressfull day.

i had a mare, who was impossible to work with.

we tried acp to start with, but it didn't touch her.
eventually had to get vet out to properly knock her out with a jab. then we had 6 weeks to work on getting near her feet... ultimately we could do her with large quantities of acp in her and a twitch ... and 3 strong handlers, and a very patient farrier...

ps, she was 15hh, and had to have 2 jabs from the vet of whatever it was.

and ACP wise could take 30 or so... x

Oh god thats a lot for a a horse that isnt very big, Well vet had to sedate mine to put poultice on his foot as would not let noone near it, to be fair cant blame him who would not try kick someone after poking around in his foot for an abcess.

But the sedation (1) then knocked him for six and hes 17.2, he was swaying on the spot it really hit him, but was wondering if there was alternatives to getting the vet out.

I sedated mine last week as it was his first time shod and he is not usually too good for trim let alone shoes. I gave him half tube of sedalin about 6mls and he was fine,He is 16.3hh

vet used to have to come out for us for everything... literally.

once we had to box her to move yards... and vet told us to give her 25 ACP. we did. he then gave two shots of whatever it was. she was still rearing and striking at everyone, until she fell asleep, and 7 people had to move her onto box. then sit with her until she woke up.... she was the one that tried to kill me, and knocked every ounce of confidence out of me.

Dont get me wrong hes not bad but he doesnt keep still so farrier couldnt chance trying to shoe him as if he tried the nail the shoe he doesnt know where its going as he just snatches his back feet all the time

Blimey how did you cope,
I got all stressed and upset today, this horse has spent more time out of work than in work this year. ONe thing after another and then to finally get shoe back on from abcess and this happens, So if I had yours I think I would have given up altogether lol.

i didn't... she completely broke me... it was heartbreaking, and bankbreaking too!

Oh sorry to hear that,
I took for granted horses that are good to be shod, Ive always had horses that just stand there and now mine being a pain It gets me all mithered.

my darling little raff falls asleep when being shod... no sedative needed! i think having a very difficult horse has made me appreciate every single thing he does! awww, i'm going all mushy now....

Yep it is something you take for granted, as is loading, as is catching etc until you have one that is bad. I always go "woow" when my girl walks in the box, knowing it's all my work

I will be soon... it will be the first time he'll have been shod, he's nearly 11, and the farrier has said he's not going near him till he's nearly asleep! He's a gem to trim, but this is a new farrier as my own has refused to shoe him as he's too big apparently, so had to find someone else!

We used to have to sedate a shirexClyde for trimming her feet. She was a nightmare otherwise was known to drag me and the farrier round the yard. She was sedated once by the vet for an abcess and following that she was sedated with sedaline, was doing fine until she then died of an unrelated illness.

My friend has to have her 17.3hh mare sedated every time she's shod. Has to have intravenous as 12 ACPs didn't touch her. Farrier has done somersaults twice on the receiving end of her feet and won't risk shoeing her without sedation. Can't say I blame him!!!

Hes fine with me messing with his feet, even the vet had to sedate him to put a poultice on but I did it no problem.
I might train as a farrier and shoe him myself lol.

How much sedaline did you give the shirex clydie.
We gave mine 6ml and it didnt touch him. It just so frustrating as hes had so much time off now and was hoping for him to finally get back into work and then this happens.
