We are thinking of selling our lorry and going back to a trailer mainly because Toto is becomming more and more of a nightmare to load (he's ok at the yard going to a show but refuses to load on the show ground coming home

) , he was brilliant in a trailer and we towed with a Shogun but got a chance to buy the lorry off a friend and despite the fact that we love it Toto is becoming dangerous to load (he's never had a bad journey in it) , so what do you all tow with, car or 4x4?

I used to tow 1 horse in a 505 with a Mercedes S class (3.2 litre engine saloon) and it was fab. Never had the slightest problem with it and it was only marginally outside the MAM weight thing. Traded it in for a Jeep Grand Cherokee which has far more towing capability and off road ability than I ever need and hate it, despite being deisel it gets 20mpg when towing, less than the S class, and isn't half as nice to drive.

Yes - my parents Renaut Megane Scenic (Alize) 1.9 MPV can tow the box with the pony in it no problem but the horse in the box is too heavy to risk it although it towed it round the carpark with her in it ok.

4x4 in my opinion are alot safer than cars because the 4x4 are heavier and offer more stability (ive never towed with a car so cant really comment)

I've towed with various cars, from jag's to Renault's.

TBH sometimes you can tow easily because of the power like my old Jaguar or because they're more stable like my 4x4.

Overall, I would pick my little Rangy for towing because it provides the stability (and you can sit on the drop down boot for a rest.)

Not forgetting you can get off a boggy show field without a tow from a friendly tractor.

I tow an Ifor 505 with a large car and sometimes tow my friends 510 in her Diesel Land Rover and to be honest, they both have similar power and stability from a drivers point of view.

Only difference is weight wise I can tow 2 horses with the Land Rover, but only 1 with the car.

Also have towed with my friends automatic Petrol Jeep which is amazing to tow with, you wouldn't even know the trailer is there, even with 2 horses on. But it does drink A LOT!

We have a fairly old Bayhill trailer which is quite lightweight. If we need to move the trailer empty, then we use our old Citroen BX 1.9, which tows it fine (and is cheaper to run than the Landrover), but I would never want to use that to tow when horses are on board. If we need to take the horses anywhere, then its the Defender 110, which hardly notices what it's pulling.

I use my 2.0 TD Nissan Primera car - engine copes fine with hills etc and I am just within the legal weight. I have a Bateson Derby trailer and my chap is under 500 k.

I do avoid travelling in bad weather, ie high winds, but I would even if I had a 4 x 4. I also have to be careful about very wet and muddy fields, but most of the venues I go to have good flat fields or hard standing. I also can only tow just my cob, but again this is all I need to do.

My car does 45 mpg and about 38 mpg towing and is happy to roll down the motorway at 50 all day if needed. As long as Chancer doesn't grow a huge amount more, I plan to stick to it for the moment and at two/three day shows, take my tent or sleep in the back of the car. Maybe long term I will look at a very small car and a small transit type box with an area for changing and sleeping over the luton.
