Does anyone tow with a Tiguan

As above really.

It's legal, I've got a 4x4 model with capacity to tow 2200kg. I'm within my limit to carry either

-1 small pony and Bateson derby on a B
-2 ponies in a Bateson Derby or ifor 505 with b+e.

But has anyone actually done it and can tell me how it tows and what you have pulled with it?

Would two ponies be too much of a risk with an 'SUV' type 4x4 even though it's legal?

I can't change the car so it's this or no transport at all as I can't afford a 3.5t sadly :(

Thanks!

No manufacturer in the world will give you a towing limit that the car is not capable of towing. If VW say it's capable of 2200kg then it's probably capable of a bit more as they will always err on the side of caution. Think of the court cases if people started crashing or ruining their vehicles by towing a maximum weight the car is not able to deal with.

The Derby weighs 675kg so even with 2 14.2 ponies won't weigh much more than 1700kg. The 505 is 905kg - again even with 2 horses you're not likely to be over 1900kg. You'll be fine.

Thankyou Anna.

I thought I had cracked it however I have had lots of people comment on how dangerous it would be and that the car is too light!

It has a GVW of over 2000kg so should be heavy enough for the job.

I have two ponies, one 13.2hh and one 14.2hh. Both cobs.

I would take them one at a time if it was going to be dangerous but obviously would rather take two!

Yes and loved mine. Towed one horse regularly but took two once and it felt absolutely fine as if there was no extra horse. Fabulous tow car.

My mum does, she's towed two horses in a 511 with no problem, hers is the automatic diesel, which I think I read somewhere can tow the most out of the Tiguan models

We have the new shape Tiguan with DSG - OH is not impressed with it towing wise. He found it labored, even though it is the recommended MAM %age and it drank fuel like a teenager left at home alone. Admittedly he doesn't pull horses, but track car and trailer and I do think some of it is because he doesn't really like the car (company car).

But I see a fair few at shows as a pulling vehicle, so it can't really be that heinous!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but would rather do this than create a new one for the same topic!

I currently have an A3 which obviously is no good for towing so would rather upgrade to something a bit bigger. I can't go too big as I won't get insured with it in Ireland so I think a Tiguan is ticking all the boxes. I have an ifor williams 510 and will be towing 2x 16.1 warmbloods around 500/600 kg each. Do you think a Tiguan would be okay? Not the end of the world if not as my father has a discovery but I feel bad using him to taxi my horses around! Thanks.

I would try and weigh your horses, that seems on the light side, my connie is 520kg.
Tbh I wouldn't tow more than 1 with a tiguan, and the 4WD version are very hard to find! most are 2WD. You should be looking at 2.5. ton towing capacity.

No! I wouldn't tow two with a tiguan of that size or that size trailer. Likely overweight depending on which model (there are a few that are 2.5tonne- the escape i think) but you will feel underpowered for sure.

I have a 4WD Tiguan diesel and an IW 506 and a 16.1 WB cross. The Tiguan tows that very comfortably but I would not recommend it for the setup you describe. I am almost certain you would be overweight for towing with that.
My Tiguan can tow up to 2200kg safely, but my trailer weighs around 900 kg and my horse weighs 600kg so I'm well within its capabilities. Your trailer is heavier plus your two horses may weigh around 1200kg or more. Even if you were not overweight, you would be very near the maximum and the vehicle would definitely struggle at times, for example up a steep hill and accelerating away from being stationary.
Also, you would very much need to think about the braking weight & distance with that set-up too.
