I've been offered a good deal on a BMW X5 but wonder how stable it is for towing? Does anyone have any experiences to tell me, good or bad?

My YO tows with her X5, she's always been very pleased with it, she has an ifor 510 and tows her 17.1hh tb all over the place!! I don't know what the official towing capacity of it is, but am sure it covers it. Plus to reverse her trailer into place she has to drive it up a muddy slope in order to reverse! It never struggles!

The only thing she has commented on is the removable tow hitch?? gives a little play in the drive, so if you can have a permanent hitch as opposed to the removable one I'd go for that option.

I was always told you could only tow a maximum of 1t with a removable tow hitch? I certainly wouldn't dream of towing a horse trailer with one, but perhaps I am over-cautious.

As for towing with an X5 - they are certainly powerful and you'd think they would cope powerwise, but there is some debate over the weight they can tow legally - I think (depending on whether you have an upgraded tow-package) they can tow up to 2700kg (2.7t) so depending on what trailer/size of horse you want to tow, you should be ok.

I'd go for it. Lovely car & plenty of power. Don't know what the max weight is but would think it's pretty decent (3000 kg ish) given it's a 3 litre engine. I've towed a tractor on a trailer with my Dad's. I have a Kia Sorento which I highly recommend too.

Great on the roads, awful off road. My mate took his on to the dead flat field at the back of his house, and his wife had to tow the X5 off in her Impreza.

I used to tow with an X5 and like others here it was fine for towing on the road, but don't even dream of taking it off road even over a nice flat football pitch type field. It really isn't an off road vehicle & couldn't cope with even the tiniest bit of grass so after being stuck far too many times it got traded in for a land cruiser!
