Does anyone use a stirrup mount?

I'm having to get off a lot at the moment whilst out hacking as my new mare is still very spooky and I have to lead her past scary vehicles. My knees are shot to pieces so I find it pretty impossible to mount from the ground so I end up doing a lot of walking if I can't find anywhere suitable to get back on. I've been looking at the Mark Todd stirrup mount and was wondering if it would be helpful.

Does anyone here, use a stirrup mount and if so which make? Or if anyone knows of anything better, I would love to know. Thanks.

The ones stimpy recommends look good.

Do you mean the one that is a stirrup that you thread through your normal stirrup and it hangs down? I bought one in order to get back on my 17.1 should I need to but I was worried about getting it back off my stirrup once mounted then where do you carry it once on board? I threw it away!!

Just one thing to be careful about....I bought one when riding a large horse, but when I put my foot into the mount I was too far down to swing my leg over!

i always presumed you kinda 'climbed 'with them? ie right foot in the mount, then left foot in the stirrup, then over? is that not right, lol? never used one like that, so if its damaging don't worry! :p

I have one .. does that count? Not a clue where it is I just scramble up anything I ask him to stand next to ... I'm sure he rolls his eyes but I cant see his face when I'm clambering up a fence!

I looked at getting one but figured it was the same principle as letting down the stirrup but without the fiddling...so tried letting the stirrup down a couple of holes but as someone else said, I was then too low to get my leg over!

In the end just trained him to stand next to an array of odd things so I could clamber on from either side 😃

Errm...not sure I'd fancy the horse taking off while I was clambering up like that.

I just drop the stirrup a couple of holes. Most of our hacking is fairly rural so can usually find a fence or random log or stand him down a slope somewhere

That's exactly what I was worrying about. I'm also quite concerned about not damaging her back. Thanks for all your replies, plenty of food for thought.

The Smartrider stirrups just give you an extra stirrup length that folds down...they're very good, I have a western pair. They are also safety stirrups.

I've just been checking them out and I really like the look of them. It's also great that they are safety stirrups as I'm currently riding in some after a fall a few weeks ago. Where did you get yours from?

Mine were leather covered, so a special order but they were quite fast and very helpful.

Exactly this!!! I caused much merriment at a pub, trying to use one of those and being heard to wail that "I couldn't get my leg over"!!!! A common problem at my ag!!
