Does anyone use Equioxx?

We have a mare who has been on bute daily for 6 months but can longer take it. It has been suggested to put her on Equioxx, has anyone got experience of using it long term?

I used it for a while when you could get is Previcox and it wasn't so expensive. My experience with my lad was that it wasn't as effective as bute or danilon but it did still help some. I know quite a few people who have been using it for a good while and find it to be helpful so definitely worth a go if your horse can no longer tolerate bute. The main problem I think is now that it's licensed as Equioxx it's eye wateringly expensive.

Thanks HB. It is for a 24 year old mare, she has been taking 1 bute a day for the last 6 months, however last Monday she came down with what the vet thinks is bute induced colitis. She was critical for approx 48 hours and has been very poorly indeed. She is still on antibiotics and paracetamol so we aren't anywhere near the stage of thinking about putting her back on something but further down the road when she is feeling better we will need something to replace the bute. The vet mentioned Equioxx, so googling it as you do :-) there is a lot of cost difference between it and bute and also most articles seem to recommend it for 14 days, but in our case it will be needed for long term use.

Hi, I've had my mare on it for 5 years now, well, as previcox until recently but they are exactly the same drug.

She was put on this as she absolutely cannot tolerate bute, it goes straight through her even as a one off so I can't comment on how effective it is compared to bute, but she's on one tablet a day, and whilst at times I've cut that down to half a tablet, or dropped it completely if she didn't need it, there have been absolutely no side effects for her that I've come across, she flies through her vet checks every 6 months too

Hope that helps :)

Thank you, will take a look.

you can’t get previcox for prescribed horses anymore sadly

Equioxx used to only be available in a paste form so vets could prescribe prev for horses as it was tablet form and easier to get horses to take, therefore they could get around the licensing.

However Equioxx is now licensed for horses in tablet form so they have to prescribe that… the price difference is disgusting, I used to be able to get 90 tablets for £40 odd, now it’s £106 for 60 for what my vet says is literally exactly the same drug ☹️

We have our veteran arab on it and he seems to tolerate it well. I have bought it on prescription as too expensive via our practice. My understanding from our vet is that it is targeted joint relief rather than a blanket pain killer.

My 26 yr old gelding has recently gone on to Equioxx which seems to suit him. I’m looking to get a prescription from the vet (£38 I’ve been quoted) & buy online. Which company has the cheapest / best value?

Yes my big cob is on it.
It worked extremely well for us.
I love that you just need to cut a slit in a piece of apple and push the pill in it great for horses outside and no need to feed them feeds they don’t need .

Where do you buy it from?

Unfortunately I said goodbye to our dear arab nearly 2 years ago now as this is an old thread. I did purchase it from an online pharmacy, so I think if you google you will be able to compare prices - you just need a prescription from your vet.
