watch/stay with their horse when he/she is eating hard feed?

Most people/yards don't do they? But some people do because of fear of choking??

I do, Chex seems to be choking more often these days

. He only takes a few minutes to eat though.

Yes I always stay around all of mine when they are eating. I have a horse who sometimes gets choke so I like to make sure all is well. I also have to go into the field to throw all the feed buckets out when they are finished so it makes sense for me to wait while they eat....and to be honest, by the time I have finished feeding the last field, the first field have finished.

Oh that's very interesting. I really though noone would reply saying they did watch their horse eat.
Still it was something I suggested to one of the staff at my livery yard and they are going to start watching/being around until they all finish eating.

Oh no, it's something I have always done since I've owned livery yards. When you have very expensive horses belonging to someone else; I think it is imperative and if my horses were at livery this is something I would definitely expect I'm afraid. Comes under the Care of Duty rules in my book.

yes im alsway around whilst hes eating, then i have to pick up the bucket scrap out the remainder of feed and hand feed him lol just somthing i do as he cant get the bits around the edge !! also he expects it now lol !!

I always stay with mine while they eat
1/ To stop anyone trying to pinch another ones feed
2/ Because I have to pick up the bowls to wash and put away.

We do tend to stand outside the TBs stable when he has his hard feed. He had choke recently and daughter is worried about it happening again. Yes I know it can happen with forage too but we've never seen HIM choke on haylage.

When Mo is stabled he lets me know when hes finished his dinner, he chucks his bowl out the stable lol.

Im always around when they are eating, usually brushing up etc.

I always hang around while he has his hard feed. I enjoy the quiet time around him but more recently I have to as he bullies his companion at mealtimes if he's allowed to get away with it.

I have to stay with mine as I feed them in the field, and the two youngsters get very little whereas my 18yo gets quite a bit more...so I have to police them

I usually change their rugs or groom them while they eat anyway.
