Does clover upset horses eyes

As in the post my horse has been wearing his fly mask but his eyes are swollen.Hes not on his regular field and has stripped most of the grass and has been grazing in clover areas.Ive bathed his eyes washed his mask for tomorrow and will swap his field.Im also keeping him in tonight hoping they go down.Friend on the yard suggested it could be a reaction to being short of grazing but I thought the glands would come up not eyes.Any ideas please
 
we had a horse on the yard that this happened to but he had been bitten!All of ours are on fields with clover with no probs!!However it can cause swelling of the eyes but usually alongside conjuntiva and red linings???Have you checked eyelids???this is all to do with photosensitisation though,and there are alot of other symptons!!
it could be that it is probably a bit rich,take him off it for the day and see what happens....then mayb try him again....if they come upi again you can put it down to clover

It is probably the start of conjuctivitis. Had the vet to see my horse as she had the same problem but only with one eye. She had horribe gunk coming out of it. The cream he left cleared it up the problem but she now has a blocked tear duct which she is going to have flushed next week. My vet said that he has seen a lot of conjuctivitis cases this summer so far. More than likely due to the crap weather and horrible flies.

Dont leave the condition to get worse. I know it will cost you and I have had more than my fair share of vets bills but your horse must come first......and my horse always wears a fly mask!!!
 
Cellie - like TicTac says, it won't be the clover. More than likely the flies and wind and rain but you can never take chances with eyes as they are too fragile (see my ned Sunny in my sig who had to have an eye removed) so I'd get the vet out asap and if ned needs cream or ointment, be very very careful how you put it into his eye. Best ever method is put it on the end of a clean finger and put THAT in your neds eye. The plastic pointy end of most ointment tubes are very sharp (manufacturers take note PLEASE!) and one jerk from a tetchy ned as you apply the ointment and you can damage or puncture the eyeball.

Not another vet visit due. You should have a loyalty card with your vet, like Tescos.
 
Thanks I have some golden eye ointment that we use at home so will treat him with that tomorrow I also bathed them with optrex tonight so I am hoping it will have gone down in the morning .I will put him back on his regular field and pick up some more optrex .His eyes are a bit red and slightly weepy.A few days ago the wind had caused his eyes to run and flies were about more than usual so perhaps its a combination of both things.
 
No problem the vets a regular visitor to my horse.If its not one thing its another hes booked on 22nd but i will bring it forward if needs be.Does make sense with all the flies but I have been using a mask during the day.
 
Thats a really good idea I could probably fly to australia with the points accrued.How are things your your bunch marcos been up to tricks as a escape artist,he must be feeling better naughty boy.Have you found your new horse yet.
 
I read your post earlier and replied it prompted me to ask my question.I will be checking in the morning and will call vet if needed hes out to me for lameness issues soon .Hope your feeling a bit more positive Ive had a terrible year with mine as well they do put you through it at times.
 
Clovers supposed to be quite good for horses (in moderation I suppose). Don't think it will be the clover. Probably an infection so don't know if Optrex will do any good. If it gets worse I'd bring the vets visit forward.

Hope it does heal up on its own in the next 24 hours. Especially as its the weekend (triple vet bills and all).
 
A quick update the swelling has gone down a fair bit I dont think anyone else would notice swelling now .Ive just treated with golden eye ointment and he let me put brolene eye drops in which really surprised me.
 
My horse had the same problem when he got his fly fringe off. I rang the vet and she said if it was both eyes it was unlikely to be an infection and it was probably flies. The eyes had improved enormously by the next morning.
 
clover usually attacks the mouth hoofs and stomach not the eyes to be on the safe side put her back on her normall field and call vet for advice on the eyes!
