Does having horses make you totally neurotic or is it just me?

I don't know if I've always been a neurotic control freak or if having a horse has made me this way.

I would never get rid of my horse but I do wonder if my personality is suited to the roller coaster of horse ownership.

Tell me I'm not the only one??

No not just you.. :) I am really specific in our routine and if hubby helps out and ties haynets in the wrong place, it is like everything is now out of sync! Horses don't seem to care how nutty their owner is but they do enjoy a routine at the very least ;)

I find having horses gives me a productive outlet for my neuroses and calms me down ultimately, cos I can get it all out of my system by obsessing over various aspects of horsecare. This season's annual conundrum is what I call 'Hay-Maths'. Keeps me mentally occupied for hours on end! :-p

glad it's not just me I'm like that with my OH if he does the horse on his own he gets 20 questions on his return.

I'm always imagining horrible things such as what if my horse gets kicked and the joint gets infected, what if he stands on a nail and it bursts his navicular bursa and it's curtains... I could go on lol.

I don't know what's wrong with me sometimes!

It has made me a weather neurotic that's for sure! I get strange looks from friends for being overly concerned about the exact over night temperature, wind speed and precipitation forecast; and the subsequent twitchiness if HRH has not got correct rug weight or is possibly shivering in the field/overheating in the stable ... Oh the worries!

Previous to horse ownership I couldn't have cared 2 hoots if it rained all night unexpectedly ... Nowadays I lie awake in turmoil wondering whether to venture out in dressing gown to 'rescue' them from the rain...

Exactly this!! Nice to meet a fellow weather obsessive!

Check the weather forecast daily .... or more frequently. Absolutely outraged if it's incorrect and boys therefore in the wrong outfit :o Horse ownership can definitely do funny things to a person!

Ha ha yes - why do they get the forecast wrong - there should be penalties! I got up at 5.30 yesterday to get them in before forecast 'torrential' rain started..cue mild drizzle until lunch and 2 sweaty horses in stable ...grrr!

I am this too am afraid …. One of mine had colic after turn out onto a rested paddock last week and now I am totally OTT about timed turnout before returning to previous, muddy paddock where I can then stress about madam running/skidding about like an idiot, and hurting herself. Luckily I can leave work and pop home to move her but really!!! this is OCD for sure huh? Oh and I check the weather also every morning… lol :)

and me. Has horse had enough work, too much, should we have done more of this or less. Is he stiff, is he tense, does he need to come in for a night, should he stay out etc etc etc and if things arent going well then I can cry at the drop of a hat.BUT when its good it GREAT!!! On the whole though I am happier at the moment than possibly ever in my life! (Well not this exact moment because I thought it was going to be very cold tonight and its not - should I have put on a lighter rug?)

I am a neurotic freak, made much worse by the fact i lost my mare suddenly to unexplained colic last year!

i constanstly worry it will happen to my new one and i am completely ocd about routine, hay weights etc
nearly had a meltdown when i realised my partner fed my lad a dry feed (i always wet it incase of choke) lol

as for the weather i must check forcast 20 times a day, my mates think im nuts (except the horsey ones of course who are just as bad )lmao!

horses certainly send us a bit crazy haha

they are horses!! they wont melt!!!

After losing my Clydesdale boy to illness last Xmas Im alot more paranoid/neurotic than I ever used to be. But on reading this I know Im the same with my dogs and parrots too :o
I think Ive lived on my own too long haha :rolleyes3:

TBH I'm pretty chilled about rigging and temp management... I don't worry too much about the weather, he lives out so I figure as long as he's got shade for if its too hot, plenty of forage, a windbreak and plenty of space to run about if he's cold then he'll sort himself out if my rigging is slightly off. They get checked twice a day, and just have to cope in between...

YO turned round to me the other day, saying they haven't really been eating their hay, not sure whether to start them on haylage... my attitude is leave them - there's obviously enough grass if they aren't munching the hay - why waste the haylage?

I don't think about lameness etc, he has shivers and EPSM so I try not to think about how much worse it could get. Only time I worried about field injuries was when he and his old field mate kept getting caught going at it like stallions, coming in with only shreds of rugs left - but changed fields and now don't worry any more.

I am more of a worrier when actually ON my horse.

glad its not just me!
Im awful, especially when it comes to muckng out! if a friend kindly does it as a surprise, i cant see past the fact that they probably havent done it the way i do ( obsessively) to see that it was a lovely thing for them to consider that as Im late leaving work they thought they would help me out. I have to really think about the fact that it was a kind favor and my horse wont die overnight if there is a few nuggets of poo extra in her bedding.
im the same with feeds, rug changes, haying etc if anyone else does it but me!
thinks I need to get a grip!!
