) ive got feed left from march/april time that is stored in plastic dustbins and sugar beet stored in an old freezer. can i start feeding him this again or do i need to buy new bags ?

You will find that it will loose it's nutritinal value and become more bitty and dusty and not be as good quality as good feed. I am sure someone can give a better explaination

If you look at the best before date on the bags thats when the vitamins and minerals etc expire. If they have been stored free from the elements and vermin they should be ok. If your feeding for the goodness then just check the dates. Also look for any signs of mould and give it a good smell!!!!

only the sugar beet is still in its bag, the rest is loose in the bins but is protected from vermin and the elements.ill nip up the local tack shop and see how long the expiry date is on there feed and take it from there. thanks for replies

My ex-husband was (and still is, albeit now in NZ!) an environmental health officer and I can remember many years ago telling him how I noticed one of my feed bins, during the summer months, when nags were out 24/7 and not being fed shortfeed regularly, had an almost "sweet" smell and upon very careful inspection (you need good eyesight) you could see minute amounts of "movement" amongst the mix. Ex- was quick to point out to me that this was weevil infestation and I must admit, he was correct! So watch out in the summer months when feed has been stored in bins unused for several weeks....I'm always aware of the possibility of weevils and even had to throw away a recently opened sack of Blue Chip for that reason!!
