Does lice mainly affect the mane area?

If a horse has lice, is it mainly the hair around the mane that is missing?

Following on from my last thread, my horse either has ringworm or lice - she has 2 or 3 patches of hair missing on her side then a whole big patch missing right on her withers.

I have some maleseb shampoo, will this kill off both? Do i wash just on the patches or everywhere? I have started with the shampoo and also put some louse powder on the missing patches incase it's lice. How do i know when it's gone?

Can she still be turned out? (she goes out on her own) , do i still rug her?

Any rugs she has had one will need to be cleaned before they go back on her.

If she has ringworm you need a skin scrape to diagnose and then get the right stuff for treatment. If it is lice she will be itchy along her mane and possibly her belly. The two things need different treatment. If it is ringworm, be careful as humans can catch it from the horse. Yes you can turn out but not with anything else if that were me (ringworm). It can also be passed on from rugs etc and wood. Best course of action is to find out exactly what it is from your vet before treatment.
