I heard today that if you put a gelding in with mares it can bring on their seasons and make them more intense. I'm not sure there can be any truth behind this as the gelding has its testosterone making abilities removed so it wouldn't have the smell of a stallion etc which would set off a mares season ... anyone ???

Are there any other disadvantages to mixing the girls and the boys?

Mares cycle regardless of what other horses are around - so there is no "brining on their seasons", they happen anyway. Some mares will show to a gelding, but most are not interested. I have three mares and a gelding, and my girls are not interested in him at all. However for a lot of years there was an old stallion in the paddock next door (big fence and ditch), and they would always go and talk to him.

No. My mare's seasons were a lot worse when she was in a mare herd, as their cycles all aligned and they ended up kicking merry hell out of each other. Now she is out with a gelding it is much calmer :)

LOL - I have heard some scary stories of woman in the same office aligning and all getting PMS at once.

I have one mare (ex broodmare) and three geldings, when the mare first came, she was embarrassing, winking and squirting everywhere when in season, my lad just ignored her, bring on my TB who was mortified at her antics, throw in a 3yr old cob, who followed her like a pet dog before getting bored, two years on and her seasons come and go un noticed

My slut of a mare only has to be in sight of geldings and she pees, she is the biggest slapper according to the stud!

When we go away to shows I have to ask for her to be stabled away from geldings as within minutes of meeting her they are all hopelessly in love!

My friends mare only has to meet a new gelding for a few seconds before she will instantly turn into a tart....

At shows she is a downright hussy. My little gelding is equally as bad with her but my poor TB was assaulted by her at one event. She had him cornered and was licking his neck, squirting, winking at him, nibbling his flanks, so much so that we had to separate the pair of them so he could relax. She was only in season 2 weeks before. So yes, I am of the opinion that some mares can go into season when mixed with geldings, especially when first meeting them.
Not so much once they have been in with each other for a few weeks or so. Whether they actually cycle or not, I don't know but that mare certainly acts like she is up for it.

My old Thoroughbred mare was exactly the same. She ended up with a fan club wherever she went.

The livery I'm at runs in mixed herds. My mares will come in season if a new gelding is introduced to the field, but they soon settle back into a normal cycle.
I like them all together, and any squabbles are usually over very quickly.
