Ok so I don't normally 'do' dressage, but new instructor wants me to work at elementary level to improve our jumping

(I know she's right really

) so as I normally have a forward cut close contact saddle - I have bitten the bullet & bought a wintec dressage one.

Now, obviously it looks odd to me

But it fits in all the right ways that a saddle should- Is it too far forward? How do you think it looks? Opinions gratefully received!

hmm yes - I did wonder that? It has a red gullet (I think a wide) which is the same as the gullet in my bates momentum, but maybe I need one down from that.

It looks to be tipping backwards slightly but that may be rectified by placing it further back behind her shoulders. It also looks a little low at the front but by making it narrower with a gullet change, you will tip it backwards even more. Wintec do tend to only fit a bit of a curved back as they are very banana shaped which can be seen in your photos with the panels curving up at the back rather than flush to her back more. Looking from the back, you want to see how much of that panel is going to be meeting with her back and from that picture, a big part of the weight bearing surface is going to be at the outer edges as it curves back into her.

However it may look and feel totally different once you are sitting up there......

I have a feeling that the rear part of the saddle is going to "bounce" on her back..... get someone to video you riding in it....

Wintecs are renowned for "the wider the gullet, the more the back lifts"

But they are comfy! I have one!

hmm.. when I put weight on it the banana bit is a lot flatter but take the point about it moving - that did cross my mind! Will get someone to watch me ride in it!

Thanks

Looks a bit shoulder restricting to me as well. Can you fit a couple of fingers breadth behind the shoulder before the saddle edge? When you pull the front leg out, does the scapula rotate back and catch the saddle?

It might just be the picture, but the seat looks very flat and the skirts(? where your legs rest) don't look to have much of a definite shape. From a rider's point of view I'd want a deeper seat and one that encourages a secure leg position. Have you looked around at second-hand leather ones, which IMO are much more suitable for horse and rider.

I would like to see more of the rear of the saddle in contact with the horses back so it would spread the weight more evenly but thats just my opinion

I think it will do this when I am sitting on it - just depends whether it will move or not. Will have to try and see!

old red - this is a good test that I haven't tried. Will have a go - I think it may be resting a bit too far forward though.

KVS - Looked at 2nd hand ones but nothing doing. I don't actually want a lot of roll on the saddle - my legs are pretty secure (hark at me

) I just need to actually sit on my horse rather than hovering!

IMO the less there is of the saddle the the better!

Failing that Arwen, you can send her to me, I am sure I will have a nice dressage saddle that will fit her!!!

You must come down and try hovering on Odie!!!

IMO it is far too far forward. I also wonder if it may be a little narrow??

Difficult to tell about the rest, becuase the pictures don't show how it is fitting around the shoulder.
