Iv had my mare for nearly six months now and i bought her with all her own tack but hav been finding her very fast and hard to control at canter. i have been getting lessons from a great instructor and we decided to change her bit to a happy mouth gag snaffle and put the reins on the second ring. so last night i went up to
the arena to try it out and absolutely no change still flew off in canter and only could stop her by making her spin. but when i took her back to her stable and got her her dinner and water etc i thought she was grand but when i went out to check on her about an hour later she had been rolling in the stable hardly touched her food and i gave her a carrot and she kindof ate it like a dog sort of nashing it with her mouth open she was doing the same with her haylage i tried to open her mouth to see if she was hurt but she wouldnt let me i have since seen her this morn and all her food is gone. is it possible she has a sore mouth and flying through
the pain in canter as im trying to hold her back and slow her?

how is she this morning the rolling and off her food could have been due to colic!

my little man did this put him in after being rode gave him his feed he attempted to eat it then rolled got up tried to eat pawed then rolled again did same with haylege and a carrot.... vet said colicing and to walk around....

is she ok this morning??

what breed is shee and how old? was she speedy with her previous owner... my gelding was speedy in canter for 1st 8 months... hes only just started to come into my contact now, but hes an exrace horse so took time to get him use to that...

hope you find out what wrong.

if ruled out colic i would also agree with teeth checking, she may have chipped one or somthing....... may also be the saddle

my gelding went much better and a lot slower once i had his saddle reflocked and added a sheepskin numnah?

She is 11yr old 14.2 Irish Breed pony. Her saddle was specifically fitted for her and has a padded Numah plus a sheep skin riser my instructor did check her back and she seemed fine. She was fine this morning eating her haylage as normal and her carrot although she hadnt touched her water but she can do this sometimes. She also had done fresh poos so she working fine that way. She was a bit strong with her previous owner apparently and was used alot for competion work but when i seen her her canter was alot more collected than she is now. Also dont know if relevant but when I was tacking her up and tightening the girth she was doing alot more tail swishing than normal.

i agree with above i would still get her teeth checked

how does she goe on the lunge with and with out tack?

she does sound uncomfortable

glad she better this morning
x

Iv only tried her a few times on the lunge with tack when i first got her as my instructor prefers me not to lunge her to work and deal with everything from the saddle. But the few times i did try her on the lunge she was a nightmare either woudnt go or galloped!! I havnt had her teeth checked but im going to now if anything to put my mind at rest.

Just wondering, if her saddle has been correctly fitted, why does she need a padded numnah and a riser pad?

Have you had the fit checked by a saddler or did the previous owner have it done?

Might be an idea to get the fit checked again, especially if she's swishing when she's girthed up. Sounds like she's not very comfortable.
