Going to start giving my cob some oats for oomph! he can be spooky, there are evil bin bags, flowers and bottles out there! so dont want to feed him oats if its going to make him worse, any ideas? has anyone found their horse got spookier? what bout pony nuts do they give oomph? thanks

oats will not give that much oomph contrary to popular belief.Fed in small quantities they are good for horses but you need quite a large amount to make any difference.Barley tends to have a better effect but if you are wanting to feed without the fizz you would be better off looking for a ready made mix. What sort of diet is your horse on now? If he is spooky but lazy then I would be inclined to work on his spookiness with some spook proofing.

No. If you want oomph, buy a feed for this rather than oats. They have a bad reputation but I feed them straight to mine (soaked) and they are certainly not spooky or hot!

Daisy is naturally a little spooky anyway, certainly didn't make her any worse. In some ways possibly even a little better because it gave her more energy for being ridden so she wasn't spooky/nappy as an evasion.

I used to keep my horse with my hunt secretary and he fed straight oats, made absolutely no difference to a horse who was scatty to start with but gave him the energy to last for a whole day in the hunting field.

You took the words right out of my mouth Chico Mio.

I used to hunt an extremely scatty arab and on oats his brain actually connected to his legs, huge improvement over mixed feeds for him in every way. I also fed straight oats to my NF who PC'd and hunted with a 10 year old on board, energy NOT fizz. Now I feed oats to everything through the winter for warmth.

Lol!! Not if you feed them to my pony. Gave her a handful the day before and on the morning of going to do a dressage test to give her a bit more pep...we had a loose horse galloping around while we were on and she didn't turn a hair...a horse in a lovely new oakley decided to try and make a new exit and all she did was look round the corner of the trailer and sigh snort before going back to sleep. I'm either blessed or cursed...chortle. We did get 65.45%...which I was told today was really good...what do I know..I only go out to see if I can get a better score than last time.

this is really interesting because if I give my arab x TB oats she bucks for England!

I guess it is the same as everything, some horses are fine on them some not. Do you soak the oats when you have fed them before?

I feed my excitable-on-the-wrong-feed-barley-is-a-no-no TB crushed/rolled oats (has the husks on still so higher fibre than tiger oats, or 'naked' oats) and he is fabulous on them. his condition is the best it has ever been (as in fit, not fat) and it seems to give him good slow release energy with the right kind of bounce rather than fizz.

just introduce slowly so you can get the correct quantity. Mine has about half a stubbs scoop a day split into two feeds, increasing in winter. He just has them with a scoop of alfalfa chaff, no need for soaking unless you particularly want to.
