A minor rant post , here goes. Is it reasonable to ask for your horse's feed to be increased if he is losing weight/muscle ? My chap has been on the same yard for 3 months and once the grass got poorer he has steadily lost weight. I asked for his feed to be upped and have been totally ignored - would you feed a 17hh Irish mwt on 3/4 scoop of pony nuts per day - he's ridden 4 time a week and is in at night with hay. Another livery thinks I should buy extra food, what a cheek!
Moan over, at this time of year it is hard to change yards so despite full livery I daresay I'll visit daily to give him another feed!
 
I think the horse should be fed what it needs and that should have ben taken into account when your livery rate was fixed when you moved there.

I count my girl as a fairly good doer - she is a good hand smaller than yours and has just over 3/4 of a round stubbs scoop twice a day! I have only had horses on full livery a couple of times and in both cases they were fed appropriately and the YO's in both cases ensured they were on the same brand of feed they had always been on and adjusted accordingly and in consultation with me.
 
I have my boy on full livery and he is fed what is required, he had started losing a bit of weight with the poorer grass so he now has half a scoop of nuts added to his hi-fi and balancer twice a day (he's a 16.3 m/wt). If feed is included in the livery service then it should be appropriate to the horses needs.
 
You are paying someone to have your horses wellbeing at heart they should do they're job properly!!
I used to be on the ultimate scrooge yard! The beds were paper thin, you couldn't use enough hay and if you upped your horses feed that was taken as a criticism. I'd be having strong words!!
 
My god!! My boy is a good doer, and he gets 1 full scoop Winergy, and 1 full scoop speedibeet + LOTS of hay and even on that he is loosing a wee bit (he is heavy so its not bad for him to be lean in winter) and he is ridden 5 times a week, so you need to get them to wise up pronto! Or tell them they can pay for the buildup feed he will need or to have his saddle sorted so it fits if he gets too thin! What a bloody cheek! If feed is included it should be to the amount that is needed to sustain the horse in the level of work its needs.
 
Blimey what yard are you on??? Ive been at one like that....they should really be feeding what the horse needs and not what they feel like it. Deffo have words with them - i'm sure they can afford a full scoop or more of nuts etc??
 
I had the same problem on a livery yard in Herts. I had 2 horses on full livery paying in excess of £ 1200 per month and was still having to buy extra hay and feed. The hay nets given were fluffed up to look generous but i could lift them with 1 finger. Without the extra mine finished half an hour after their meal and were expected to last through the evening and night on fresh air. Not fair.
 
If your horse is on full livery, you should be able to ask for more feed or hay and you should not have to go and buy your own feed, it defeats the object of being on full livery. Despite needing full livery, this is one of the reasons I will always have assisted livery as you then determine what your horse is being fed and have no worries about quality or quantity, because if its wrong you can only blame yourself

I think I would discuss this with the YO/YM and ask for a reduction in your livery fee so that you can supply your own feed as he is not getting enough!!! At least then you will know he is being fed properly!
