Muppet who is on box rest for a fractured pedal bone has a very snotty nose and a cough. I also noticed that she had caught the outside of her lip on something the other day, and when I looked today, it was swollen and lumpy. I squeezed it and quite alot of pus came out from on the margin of her lip, not where the original scratch was - she must have caught it inside as well.

She is supposed to be going to Newmarket a week on Monday for a re-exam, so I want her to be well for that. Should I call the vet? Her temp is 100F, so normal really, but she is quite subdued for her.

Any thoughts?

Antibiotics will not do anything for a cough/cold as these are viral. The cut lip should self resolve unless her immune system is compromised or something particularly nasty has got in. She may be subdued owing to boring box rest especially since temp is OK. If you're not happy with her you can always speak to the vet who may advise you over the phone. If her temp goes up or she seems more unwell then I would call him/her. Ultimately you know your horse better than anyone so you have to decide.

deffo ring vet - travelling not so great when coughing etc - they might want to change your appointment if she's not better. Just in case she's infectious!!!
