Does smoking affect my horse?

I don't some and i really don't like it, and yes i tell everyone who smokes that i don't like it. My horse has COPD though and a few people on my yard smoke, i just wondered, when they're standing close to my horse, would them smoking affect her COPD? I have asked them not to smoke near her but they just ignore it.

Those people sound like a**holes. It is possible it could effect her if they are standing close of she is down wind of them. Is it your property she is on? If it is ban smoking from the premises. If is isn't you could talk to the owner about this problem or just keep her well away and upwind from them when they are there smoking.
 
once we had an electrician who was fixing a fault in my tack room/feed/hay storage and he got rather miffed when I told him to get out of there cause he was smoking in there. He couldnt see the problem :mad:

He went to YO who then told me off for being rude even tho I explained in idiot proof explination about smoking and fire hazard and the 20bales hay/straw:mad:
 
No unfortunately not my yard, livery and no there is no 'no smoking' policy on the yard. i just wondered if it can actualy affect her, im already spending money on meds for her copd and have no straw around her, she's on dust frees bedding and has the stable closest to the door so she has fresh air all the time, trouble is im only 16, horse is on loan to me and people in question are all adults so i can't really tell them firmly not to do that, they'll just ignore me cuz im a ''child''.
 
No real help here I'm afraid, I expect it's not good for your mare though.

I have noticed that horses generally like cigarette smoke..... I wonder why they do?
 
Could you talk to the owners of the yard about it? Alternatively maybe try to keep her as far away from them as possible. If it's only a bit of smoke she should be ok - just watch that she doesn't start coughing or anyting
 
thanks everyone, btw, she never ever coughs, her copd is not the srt where they cough but she has goo on her lungs and wheezez when breathing, it can potentialy get very dangerous if i don't keep on top of it as if the goo gets too thick and too much of it, it could block her airways, so dust and pollen irritates her lungs causing them to produce more and thicker kind of goo, atm she's really good, all i get is a few drops of clear runny stuff from her nose after running about in the field or being ridden, she can't compete during high pollen count months, has to be out, stronger meds and i have to keep checking her nose and cleaning it. its a bit of a pain but i love her :D

No one should be smoking on the yard - for obvious reasons. Your YO doesn't say anything:confused::eek:
 
Whether it effects her COPD or not, they shouldn't be smoking on a livery yard anyway, so yes it effects her safety and everyone elses too.

People can do what they want on their own property around their own animals if they choose to smoke but as a client on a livery yard you shouldn't accept people smoking around the yard, nor should any decent YO, it's a fire hazard and if god for bid the place did go up in flames, the insurance would not pay out either if there is no smoking policy in place.
 
If they keep it below 10 a-day and stick to low tar I think a horse should be fine......how the hell do they strike a match though????? :D
 
Its highly unlikely that a few wafts of smoke will harm your horses health, I'd be more concerned that they were smoking that close to her stable TBH. Funnily enough, they do often seem to like it, perhaps because so many riders smoke ?

The smoking issue is really a bit of a red herring though, it's stabling that is the real health concern for your horse.

I agree, and not just because of the environmental issues. It is the motion and action of the hind legs that supports the activity of the lungs, so the more time out and exercise the horse can have, the better.

she's out 24/7 untill the end of october or possibly middle of november. she comes in to be tacked up, groomed and have her dinner though. she'll be coming in at night during winter at 7pm and go out again at about 5am so not that long in. its just that when she is in they smoke. i guess i'm a bit OTT about it as i absolutely hate smoking myself and the smell alone makes me feel sick.
