Fi is the first horse I've had that is any different when fed Speedi beet.
She is MUCH more forward and a tiny bit spooky

Today she was full of beans and wanting to go :)

Not a stupid question. She gets hifi lite and spillers lite balancer

When I'm not so well for a few days so she's not doing as much work I cut it down or out and she will be quieter to ride. As soon as I add SB again she is full of it. (In a good way).
It certainly gives her the sparkle she needs for the show ring

I've done it too many times now to be coincidence

I tried speedi beet on mine one winter and he turned into a monster, biting, kicking and generally being a complete PITA to handle, took him off it and he was back to his normal chilled self. Luckily this was before he was backed, dread to think how he would have behaved under saddle!

Gosh as you say good job he wasn't being ridden. Funny how they are all so different

Sugar beet is hard work for the hind gut to digest so it's likely that horses it does not suit are in some way compromised in this area .

I would only feed hard feed in winter - they get plenty of energy from grass in summer. Mine get a handful of chaff with their balancer and that's it

I use speedi-beet and my boy def gets more lively if I give him too much, particularly if he is on good grazing. However it's really useful to get some fluid into him & give him a little energy if I give him a very small amount between classes when we're competing In winter he can generally eat half a bucket & not alter but I guess he's using more energy staying warm.

It did bay tb v1. He would be more spooky and if something upset him he'd work himself into a state and be almost impossible to calm down again. Usually he can spook at something but goes back to normal very quickly.

My theory is that as beet is quite rich in calcium, in an area already high in calcium it upset the mineral balance too much. A couple of yards later when I was supplementing Magnesium I could feed it with no problems.

My mare got given it in a mix up of feeds last week at the yard (I was not impressed - the last thing she needs as a porky Highland pony is Speedibeet!) and she was nuts for about 3 days after. A PITA to handle and ride, spooking at everything, leaping over drains when we went out hacking, biting the girls that work on the yard etc. Needless to say, I was quite firm in stating that a very careful note on who receives what feed must be taken...

Our carriage ponies get Fast Fibre in winter, bit like speedi beet but no sugar, just extra food for warmth and to keep weight on.

Yes, it definitely gives him extra energy and he can get quite fresh and spooky if not worked enough when on it.
He only gets it in winter to keep weight on.
