I have a loose ring fulmer, I like the bit but not the mouthpiece and was wondering if there is such a thing as a double jointed happy mouth fulmer with the loose rings? If so where can I find one - google is not my friend
Thanks hun, however needs to be happy mouth as she is funny in her mouth and needs to be loose ring fulmer otherwise she leans and I have no steering! I think I might just have to get one of those and some latex wrap but I don't think it's dressage legal?
how about hanging cheek? same stability as loose ring (eg doesnt move straight away in her mouth when touched) works on side of her face aswell. loads of them knocking about.
It's a hanging cheek that's caused it! The bit she goes best in is my mullen mouth pelham so perhaps a straight bar fulmer? Will try one without the loose ring and see what happens - I bet the bit she prefers is going to cost a fortune!
Definitely need the full cheeks as she sets her jaw to the right and runs straight through my left leg when out hacking!
Have you tried using a dee ring?
I can't find loose ring fulmers here (my favourite snaffle design) so use the french link D for bitting babies. Loads of mouthpiece choices, eg:
Hi I looked at D rings and apparently they have more play than a fulmer?
The basic story is that pony is uneven in mouth and instructor thinks that a bit that has as little movement as possible. She either takes hold and buggers off or backs off completely! Also steering can be an issue as she is still quite nappy.
I highly doubt it. I'm quite interested in bits and do look at them a lot (sad I know) but the only fulmers (and I assume you mean the full cheek with the loose rings outside) I have ever seen are single jointed and french link metal ones. It's a shame as I reckon it's a great design of bit giving the best of both worlds.
Most Horses take to Aurigan or sweet iron even if they hate normal metal, or, could always wrap in latex. Final option would be to see if someone like Abbey bits could make you one. I think they make custom bits.
PS - a D ring is essentially the same as a full cheek in that it's a fixed cheek with a straight side. Your fulmer is good as it's stable in the mouth (mainly due to the use of fulmer loops) but has the play of the loose ring.
Oh - have you looked at myler bits? Might be another idea. You can hire them as well so saves forking out. They have independent movement but with a fixed cheek option.
I guess that gives you exactly what you are after! If anything better - I hate platic bits as I always think they get scratched easily and give sharp points. At least latex is soft, cheap and replaceable! I've never understood why the fulmer cheek has never been more widely used in bit designs.
I know! Before I used to think of it as a "baby bit" and then put them in a loose ring snaffle (my fav bit) however even though she's been in ridden work for nearly 2 years now her Welshie attitude comes out and all steering goes out the window!
have you tried her in a happy mouth roller/link centre full cheek? just as they are widely available and IMO have not ever found there to be a huge difference in the fulmer and full cheek-just to rule it out as they areeasy to get! Ive always felt that the horse doesnt feel the diff between the two cheeks but the rider does as the fulmers rings move under our rein contact but it stays they same in the mouth as a full cheek.
