Did I dream this up or is it a real thing? A leather curb strap that you attach to a snaffle bit to encourage relaxation of the jaw and poll?? If it exists, where can I find one?! Just interested. Thanks.

Its a western thing, we are having training with a great chap who has recommended it for our young irish mare and are just using an old spur strap doubled up. Its very loose and I cannot see what physical affect it has but she does seem to like it. Could even be just the extra weight on the snaffle ring holding it a bit more stable in her mouth.

It has nothing to do with leverage as it's not fixed and yes, standard kit for western horses, likely for two reasons. One, they very rarely wear nosebands so the chin strap keeps the bit from pulling through if the horse opens it's mouth momentarily. Two, they are usually led, possibly worked from the ground and even "tied" by the split rein attached, obviously to only one ring. Again, the chin strap keeps the bit stable and less likely to be pulled through.

It may have a relaxing effect, and it certainly does provide a bit of stability and adds pressure to the other side of the mouth when turning, more like a side pull, which is what some western trainers start horses in. I'm a fan, personally. :)

There is another piece of kit that literally turns a snaffle into a leverage bit but I can't for the life of me remember the name! It somehow buckles on the the ring and works like the hooks on Myler bits. I've also seen someone put a chin strap on and then run a rope over the poll and through the rings to the hand. I would not recommend this!!

Great, thanks everyone! when my horses is situations where he's being strong he seems to relax a lot more if he has a curb, e.g. on a kimblewick, so I'd be quite keen to try a soft one on a snaffle as well. Will have a look. Thank you!

They aren't curb straps as you know them. They are just leather straps which loosely attached to both rings of the snaffle cheekpiece. They do not have any curb action at all. They, as said above, give weight to the snaffle to keep it even in the mouth, and with a young or inexperience rider stop the bit sliding through the mouth if rider is a bit over enthusiastic at 'pulling' on the reins.
