Does this foot look strange to you?

Its just that the sole is much more bulbous either side of the frog than usual although its hard to show it well in the photo due to depth perception. It will be 5weeks and two days between last time shod and this next one. And we are exactly four weeks two days on today.

Time before was barefoot for six weeks.

Or have the bars folded over??

Can you access and clean out the collateral grooves, wire brush the rest of the foot and take another picture?

I'd want a cleaned picture of the sole straight on to see what is really going on.
In that one I'm just distracted by the need to have very straight triangular frogs.

Hi LL. Reason was to give suport to the frog. Also because she's getting a bit pigeon toed due to long standing issue in her neck. Finally shoe giving support to outside of foot as requested by vet, i think this is due to her check ligament injury as she's been on box rest nearly 3 months. Vet rang farrier at time to discuss the situation.

I will see what her foot looks like next week when the farrier has trimmed it. Luckily the vets out a couple of days before the farrier so i can ask him if he wants to continue with this shoeing. If the weather picks up and we get some dry weather I'm hoping she can start going out again by the end of the month.

Maybe the sole isn't getting worn down being in. I know the sole doesnt directly come into contact with the ground but it still has involvement with mud, furrows of earth, stones, grass etc when in a normal turnout situation.

Heart bar shoes on a horse on box rest? What an odd thing to do.

Its retained sole because she's on box rest and not wearing them away. They either go chalky, or do that, if there is no wear.

Oh yeah I forgot the application of heartbars on box rest, I commented it was odd at the time.

On the second pic you can see where the sole will likely start flaking off at some point in time. Farrier will probably remove it.

Whenever there's a case of some weird shoeing approach, there always seems to be a vet behind that decision...

ETA - I don't think HB shoes are a bad decision from a remedial POV for certain issues (what is the ACTUAL underlying reason?). I don't think they're necessary for the pigeon toe issue.

Hi the horse has a check ligament injury from 21st December. Vet called out immediately as horse very lame initially which wore off within a couple of days.

Took horse to vets around a week after and scanned. This was the first scan. 1st scan showed good healing already at this early stage due to early intervention with cold icing, anti inflamms, support bandaging and box rest (was already on one bute a day).

Progress even better after third vet consult with controlled exercise (up to 35 mins horse walker) and daily LW ultrasound for ten mins (2 weeks on, 1 week off, 2 weeks on).

Horse has neck issues originating from C7/T1 resulting in slight pigeon toed stance and the barefoot was to encourage the foot to splay out a bit and the ligament to stretch and then when shod the heart bar for support to the frog and also the shoe has a bit of an extension on the outside to help with the ligament. Probably explained it a bit simplified but that's my understanding.

The foot was wearing too much barefoot so I cut back on walking outside. Vet said ok walker, but I not ideal I know. Walker quite big in diameter, mixed walking in both directions as much as possible but very busy yard. Also walker rarely mucked out so lots of soft underfoot which is ideal as rubber walker surfaces have been found to be detrimental according to recent studies.

Vet suggested heart bar shoes, farrier agrees. Horse is excellently shod and always has been (according to xrays).
