we have had our ponies for 8 months, in that time we have looked after other peoples ponies.

why do people get these animals and think it is ok to leave out, with no rugs, no care at all.

we are now looking after a pony which is so over weight, i would post a photo, but i think you all might go mad. she is so over weight.

is this normal on your yard do people just leave there animals for other people to look after

They shouldn't but they do. Write them a letter and keep a copy, if it doesn't improve call the RSPCA who will contact the owner. These people shouldn't get away with it

In the winter the whole yard operates a job share sceme, In the summer the yard rule is (nwritten but we all know its there) that the horses need to be checked at least once a day.

Not looking after your horse/pony is no acceptable at our yard.. and noone does it.

Having had sole charge (ie. rented yard, no help) for several years, it's never even occurred to me not to look at my horses 3 times a day.

Even now I have one on full livery at a yard I am still down there at least once a day.

Makes you wonder sometimes why folk bother buying them in the first place

Unfortunately there is always one on every yard

. The one on our yard - horse hadn't seen farrier in 5 months and had to have it shoe cut off with the hoof as hoof had grown round shoe, hasn't seen dentist in 2 years (their own admisssion) and horse was coughing so badly it sounded like it was choking BEFORE they called the vet - had the cheek to say that we should phone the RSPCA about H as he looked so awful

- H is 35+ and is just putting on his summer weight slowly to get him ready for autumn/winter and under vet supervision.

ETA - horse in question has only just moved to our yard and efforts are being made to get them to up their care to an acceptable standard - everything else here is pampered by comparison!! YO will not accept it any other way.

the owner txted me on friday and said did i want her pony, she does not have time she has young kids, sons do sport 5 night a week so she does not have time.

i was like ok, stupid i know, i will look after her, popped her muzzle on that day.wormed her. she has not been wormed in months, picked up her stuff from them.

i will add i have three small kids 6,4 and nearly 2 they all help as they are there ponies.
i will post some photos tomorrow of this pony she is so pretty, she looks like she is having quads

oh also we have a bhs welfare person on our yard, what good they do

Absolutely not....YO would never tolerate this, she has a business to run and a good name to upkeep
smile.gif
!
And i take my hat off to her as i have been on many yards, and this is the only one i have been on were EVERY horses welfare is her responsibility and she wont put up with stupidity(she accepts novices etc,but those that ask and then choose to ignore yrs of advice and put their horse/pony at risk, she wont have on the yard, and i dont blame her!!)
I would be questioning yard owner, they should be dealing with this not you!!

Get a contract written up saying she has given you ponio,in 3 mnths time she could decide she wants it back when you have put all the work in!!

Has anyone actually confronted the woman who owns the pony and basically discussed all this with her, like the YO for a start?

What you are doing is very kind yes but if you have just kinda gone along with it all and helped etc without really battering an eye lid and the woman does not know where she is going wrong and others on the yard are not fully aware of the whole situation then things like this do happen.

I know your having a bit of a moan about it, quite rightly so too, but maybe you should have this moan with the owner, rather than behind her back (don't mean that in bad way) all I'm saying is it not good helping out and doing this woman favours and then complain about the lack of responsibility she has for her pony if people are not telling her a few home truths etc

Ditto Hadfos!

Had one on one yard - I offered to buy the horse just to make sure he got some decent attention (was already giving him our hay, soaked first as he had COPD). Not the type of horse I wanted at all, but couldn't do nothing. Owner wouldn't sell. YO (not at all horsey, and really quite scary!) couldn't get through to them. Horse was moved and I don't know how he's doing now

I definately wouldn't allow it on my yard. I have full, part or DIY livery and DIY's must visit once a day or they get invoiced Full livery prices.

I have a reputation to keep as well as the maintenance of these horses welfare and anyhorses in my care reflect on me. We also have a strict worming programm. I but the wormers and add the cost onto the invoice (I buy it in bulk so it works for the whole yard) All horses must be wormed on the same day and if anyone can't get there I do it free of charge so I know they are all done. I have copies of everyones vaccination certificates too.

i'd offer her £1 or £10 to buy it from her and get a reciept and the passport then there is no risk of her taking it back!!!

No pretty much everyone takes responsibility for their own horse.

Def agree you need to ensure your terms are clear with this person who sounds random enough to forget she gave you the pony!

daisybee I so wish my YO would do this despite being a totally DIY yard.We have a couple of folk that do this.Other folk organise shoes.Everyone else keeps an eye on them for ill health/feet etc.I have stopped now and suggested other do as well so to sort of force the issue to be dealt with but sadly the horse has suffer first wether that be no attention/shoes/fed/rugged

.
Funny thing is even charging them won't make a difference as to most of these people its not a lot!!

The YO shouldnt allow this to happen!

I would have a word with the Yo about it and they should do something if they are a decent YO. I have had people try on my yard, a nice little word in the ear soon sorts it out. I even managed to rehome 2 for owners who couldnt really cope anymore.
